A sleigh ride to Key West… Nine hardy souls departed Islamorada on a bright shiny day with the wind out of the ESE at better than 12 mph, and building, Winds continued up to 15 – 18 with gusts and somewhat variable. All had a workout but reported great sailing at times over flat water, one hull out and nothing but that blue Caribbean water underneath the skimming hull.
The two Marstrom 20’s made the day, Brett Moss and crew, Mark Jones from Fort Lauderdale first arriving after 5 hours, 9 minutes and 18 seconds from start. They were followed by Mike Phillips and Nick Anderson, last year’s winners, 5 Minutes, 4 seconds later. The N20’s were led by Steve Lohmayer and Jay Sonnenklar 11 minutes and 1 second after the lead Marstrom. This year we had a great sailor who convinced the RC, only due to his significant experience, to permit racing in a A-Cat with Spinnaker. He actually corrected out in 3rd place, beating out the ARC 22, who stopped for repairs with a spinnaker pole mechanical problems.
