Turks and Caicos Islands
Hi all. Just curious to take a small poll on how far people may have traveled in one session on a Hobie Wave. I am living in Turks and Caicos and have sailed around the island of Providenciales which I estimate at between 45 and 50 miles. We did it in around 7 hours (2 boats) with a couple of breaks. I am tempted to sail 60 miles to South Caicos from Provo in time for the upcoming Big South Regatta May 24. Given our predominant East North East wind it would likely be one tack straight to SC in the South East.
What distances have other folks traveled?

Man, I wish I had someplace to go. I sail on an inland reservoir, and it's just a couple miles of sailable water. I've sailed a Wave in the Gulf of Mexico off Florida, but the resort I sail from wants you to stay within view. So no more than a few miles there either.

For distance sailing, and especially in your area, I would recommend that you install a main traveler.

Also, make sure all components of your standing rigging are in excellent condition.

Tether yourself to the boat.

And I would hope that at least one other boat is going with you.

Actually, I think a Wave could sail across the Atlantic.

Haha, I know that about you Mary after meeting you and Rick a year ago January 07 in your Regatta in Islamorada. I too am constantly "selling" the Wave as the best boats for these islands especially - big wind, shallow water. I have taken over the Provo Sailing Club but have only really been sailing for 3 years and only on Hobie's.

I definitely would go with another Wave and necessary cell phone, radio, water, food , anchor etc etc. I also wear padded bike shorts under my board shorts for long days which helps with chaffing etc.

Anyway, just curious on distances people may have gone - I doubt you'll see me in the Tybee but if I was the only one in my class you never know!!! ;~}

For most distance races singlehanders are not allowed. And most also limit entries to boats of a certain size/speed range.

Rick has raced his Wave in a couple of distance races that do allow them. One is the Sandusky Steeplechase Race on Lake Erie, and that is about 22 miles as the crow flies. The other was the Round-the-Bay Race on Maumee Bay near Toledo, which was probably closer to 30 miles.

NOTE: For distance races like that he uses a "Hooter" on the Wave.
