Posts: 70 Louisiana | So, what is the best way to remove mold from white sails? I was thinking of a little Dawn (dish washing soap) and a soft brush?

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | soak them in someone's pool overnight - the chlorine will get it. (find a chlorinated pool - not one of the new fangled salt water filtration systems)

Posts: 1,152 tampa, fl | Hijack alert.....the new fangled salt water systems are actually chlorine generators that convert NaCl (table salt) to NaHCl (chlorine) through an electrolysis process. The end result in the pool is the same as a pool that has chlorine added to it. Damn....I have worked in the aquatics industry for faaar too long.

My wife HAD to have a membership at this ONE gym in the area that had the special "salt water filtration system"....still paying through the nose. Is it cheaper to operate or is it just a marketing scheme?

So what about a 55 gal drum add water, some bleach, some oxyclean and stir, soak, stir, soak... rinse rinse rinse.....

Kinda like alchohol, when used in moderation its great, too much then all goes to hell! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Clayton | | | Re: How to remove mold from white sails?

Posts: 5,582 “an island in the Pacifi... | The salt systems are cheaper to operate but... (I'll get to the but in a minute). No more chlorine tablets and no more smell. The salt system does convert salt to chlorine and is very effective in keeping the pool algae free.
Now the but. The system is made up of two components: the controller and the generator. The entire system can be had on the web for about $1000. The generator will get clogged with minerals in the water. It can be cleaned by soaking it in a mixture of muriatic acid and water to clean but after five years the generator is pretty much toast. A replacement can be had for $395.
So, if you don't like the tablet chlorine smell and don't mind shelling out $395 every five years, a salt system is the way to go. It might be worth while to see how much chlorine would cost over a five year period. The salt system might be cheaper. US Sail Level 2 Instructor US Sail Level 3 Coach | | |
