Sailing cats for some 20 plus years, received a new Infusion recently, and admired the running rigging on board. Questioning the very basic Main Sail outhaul system. Since I am in the North East I have not had the weather to splash her in yet, but questioning the boat has such well laid out running rigging and then you come to the Main Sail outhaul on the boom and it seems kind of half butt'd. You tie figure 8 knots in the line and then hook it to set the main sail outhaul tension. Do sailors upgrade this or is it sufficient? I understand modern spinnaker cats you do not have to adjust the outhaul very often but still this system seems a bit lacking. Possibly I should wait to pass judgement until I get out and sail it a few times. Curious if it is somethnig that sailors quickly modify and how?

Thanks

I've heard complaints about that. That line *will* wear and part. Most guys change it often and keep a spare on the boat while racing. You can modify to use the old system very easily - if I owned one I would. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

I have a new one too. The whole Main-boom-clew set-up on the new Infusion is a little bit strange IMHO. (Saving weight or money or both?)

I have sailed an infusion for over a year now, and find the simple outhall system fine. This is mainly because I have two settings, one for flat water and one for the sea. I don't know of any top F18 sailor who adjusts the outhall while sailing, so why does it need to be adjustable? Especially when pulling on the cunningham effectively pulls on the outhall too to flatten the base of the sail upwind.

The rope does snap easily, so make sure you file the groove in the boom so the edges are round.

The stock rig is not durable enough, and I'd rather have an outhaul that I don't need to worry about. At our regatta 2 infusions sliced through the spectra outhaul 3 times. Granted, it was blowing 25 the first day. Suffice it to say that I will be changing mine as soon as I figure out the best mod. I have never seen th old system. Can somebody hip me to the design?
