I wondered which water-proof video cam we could use to attach to our Nacra 5.8 when sailing? We are contemplating the Digital Hero 3, but (since we don't have a spinnaker pole to attach the camera to) we are wondering where and how to affix the camera.

Does anyone have experience with videotaping a sail, or know how to do it?

I see all types of neat catsailing videos on YouTube, and would like to try it!

Help please!!! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

Check in at www.1design.net and ask for the Nazi! He's been doing it for several years.

Search for a talented man named Hakan. You'll find him on this forum and he has done it all.

Hakan's my hero!

Hakan's camera equipment.

He has used a boom off of the rear cross beam to film himself driving an A-cat very well both up and down wind.

Thanks, Guys, I'll check it out! Although your link is kinda old (2004), Hobiegary, I think I will get some helpful info. Timbo, I like the site you've directed me to!

If you are going with the digital hero then fixed mounting points make for more usable footage than using it hand held. If you go with a cam corder with some kind of digital image stabilization and a water proof case then it is possible to get some hand held footage if you aren't driving [e.g. this: Three amigos. 45 minutes of drunken footage cut down to 7.

Good luck with your film making!

Chris.

The Nazi shot most of those sailing videos on the opening page, using onboard waterproof cameras like you are looking for, he can tell you what works and what doesn't. Good luck with it.

I found a windsurfer mast was very stable and stuck out the front a longway. I attatched the thick end under the front beam and the middle to the front bridle wires on my Stingray. Havn't done it on my 5.8 yet but should work the same. The camera I used wouldn't do both sides of the boat so I just set it to the interesting side with the most reaches and action.

Digital Hero 3 here. It comes with a "wrist strap" that fits perfectly around the bridle foil on our 6.0. Only neg is you have to start it before you shove off. I also recommend getting a 2g SD card. It will hold an hour of video.

Anybody who knows where to find the bag and lens HÃ¥kan used/use? Preferrably affordable so I guess that rules out professional equipment?

With a roll of electrical tape, you can attach the Hero3 just about anywhere, boom, mast, rudder crossbar. Try different spots!

For the money the Hero3 is a really great buy.

Does anyone have any good ideas for attaching it to the top of a hull?

I've mounted mine to the frontbeam of the Tiger a few times.
If you remove the velcro straps you can tie some line to it and wrap that around the beam and tramp.
I also got an old windsurf boom front head clamps about the tip of the spin-pole giving a good rear view.
(Somewhere I have a clip of a bad nosedive, will put it on youtube when i have some time).
