I get too many magazines (one less lately - RIP Boatbuilder ), one of them being Sailing.

I like it, it's got lots of large beautiful sailing pictures, variety of stories, etc.

My only complaint is that they seem to love to emphasize that multis capsize. When the large beautiful pics are of cats and such they love a good capsize pic above anything else. VX 40s? Could have showcased lots of great pics of these things under sail, but the main spread is of the capsize pics (that were all over the place by then). They reviewed one of Farrier's designs and had to go on about the conversations with Ian over capsizing. Etc.

So, I get the June issue, and the "For Openers" picture is of a Tornado - both bows dug in and ready to endo. "Typical" I think.

But then I get to page 50...

An article about Spring Fever! Great article, lots of great shots, and no pics of capsizing!

Who pulled off this little gem and got it in the middle of Sailing Magazine?

Hmmmmm, the tag line says John Williams! Way to go John! With all the stuff going on over the USS stink, this is a wonderful diversion. Congrats for writing a nice piece and getting it published in one of the better rags!

Thanks, Keith.

Credit really goes to Walter Cooper (great photographer) and Mr. Ernie and Nigel, who were very patient while I grilled 'em.

After watching Lionel Messi play, I realize I need to sail harder.

Way to go John! The mono mags love to point out the capsize aspect of multihulls, because, well, because they got nothing else. That is their justification for dragging thousands of pounds of lead around, at 5 knots. Makes them feel safe.

Kind of like driving with your Grandma. "Not too fast there sonny boy...you don't want to get hurt!" And most of them would rather -not- take their boats out and get wet anyway, much safer to sit at the dock and talk about sailing, especially if it's blowing. You might capsize that thing if you actually put the sails up...

Funny you should say that...

In the May edition of Australian Sailing magazine, the editor has a page up near the front, which is titled FROM THE HELM. This is talking about the larger cat variety though.

The opening line on this particular subject is, 'On the subject of multihulls, can they please stop flipping over during the Brisbane to Gladstone race?'

Then theres a couple of paragraphs detailing the capsizes. It finishes with the following.

'You have to wonder how long the authorities will refrain from slapping more regulations on the general boating community if the capsizes continue from year to year, or what might happen whena really rough Easter comes along'.

Now it might be just me, but i read the 'general boating community' as monohullers.

The lead does have one big use - it sinks the boat when it capsizes/floods so that no journalist can take a picture to publish as evidence! Clever these mono sailors eh?
