Once again Oley and joanna are not thinking about others when they sail. We arrived at Ocean springs Friday night, double stacked. Well for those who have not been there since the storm imagine the area flat, with a trailer on it. Is better then when I was there 2 years ago, and the new club house should be ready this time next year.
Friday night the wind was whipping around nicely but the weather forcast was for light winds the next day, and they were right. The largest group were the spin boats, with 2 Blades, 4 1-20 3 or so F18s, 1 TheMightyHobie18 with spin, a p19 with a spin, and i think that was it in our group. We started around 1130. Jim Brown had been convinced to crew with me so both blades were in sloop configuration. oley and Joanna jumped out to a nice lead heading to point cadet, and stayed up there with the I20s. We were in the second group but going down the channel got infront of 2 i20s and the f18s. Well after a nice reach with the spin we turned to the island for the beat out. That was not fun. We made some bad tatically calls and lost a lot of ground. Well oley got 3rd corrected going out and I never saw where we finished. Well after the chicken and drinks (which kinda ran low quickly) a vote was taken and the course was shortened to go straight back to OSY instead of around 12 again. Well the down wind stard was great, and The blades did nicely against the bigger boats. We stayed infront of the f18s most of the race till I got out of synch and lost a lot of ground. Oley and jonna really turned someheads by staying with the I20 downwind. in about 6 knot of air. Apparenltly they learned at the AC to release the spin halyard some in light air. A trick we found out about later.
Well they got first corrected that run.
have to go back to work so will write about sunday in a bit.

I have also heard/tested that releasing the spin halyard in light weather is better. We release it about 5 cm, any ideas on how much it could be? I imagine not more, maybe even less then 5?
Next to that I have heard this isn't too good for the shape of your spin in the long run... Experiences to share?

This weekend we had our spin down between 12-16 inches. It really helped with getting the extra air by billowing out more. Also in the light air I really pay attention to the jib. Making sure the tell tales are flying properly. Wild thinging the boat (and trapping/hiking out when the wind did come up) to keep the top hull out of the water as much as possible made a huge difference also. We did keep up with the I20's nicely, but then again it was the perfect wind for us and they could or used a little more. Getting the boat dialed in has been a blast!!!
