I have a Supercat 19 that i have rebuilt over the last few years... i've decided i want to add a boom so i can depower the boat and get better sail shape in different wind conditions...... as of now i have a mast rotation arm at the base of the mast going to some blocks on the front beam and out to cam cleats.... i really don't like this set up and would rather get some help designing a boom... i have a windsurfer mast i am going to use and a boom connector plate from a prindle 19 to rivet to the mast.... just not sure if i should use a harken track to control the sail outhaul... any input would be great.....

you don't need a track for the outhaul. Make sure the boom is cut several inches longer than the foot of your main (measured with the main flat on the floor obviously). Put an exit block (harken part 242 or similar) at the end of the boom and rig a 2:1 block system in the boom to use as an outhaul. Gets a little complicated trying to explain the 2:1 set up but still a better idea than a track.

A loop of nonstretch line like amsteel, attached to a shackle, I have a quick release shackle and the end of the outhaul is tied to the shackle.

Since the boom is round, the loop will slide back and forth as you adjust the outhaul.

The quick release shackle lets you quickly unhook the main at the beach.

Does your boomless setup use a track as an outhaul? Are you modifying your mainsail to go with a boom?

no.. my main sail just uses stainless steel plates sandwiched on either side f the sail with multi. holes for locating the mainsheet.. but i am planning on having a square top made at a later date....

Gotcha. I see how that is limiting. I sail with a SC19 that is boomless. He has a track on the mainsail that acts as an outhaul and with the mast rotator controls they are able to shape the sail very well... but the outhaul track is key. I PERSONALLY would do that and not install a boom. Unless you are racing... i find boomless a great feature.

I also sail with several GCats that are boomless, and simply have a clew plate... they are very fast but Hans (the Gcat designer) does use a boom sometimes on his GCat...

I really doubt that you will make the sail better (faster or easier to shape) by adding a boom. If you got a new sail cut for a boom then maybe, but you'd get much of the same advantage from a new boomless sail too.

I recommend just installing a clew track on your mainsail, instead of adding al the weight of a boom. I've done this on my 5.7. Adding an over-rotator at the mast base, to control mast position downwind is also very helpful when racing boomless rigs
