Uggg. I know I'm a fool for ordering brand new sails for a '79, but it needs sails and I'm not coming up with anything decent used. Can't sail it at all right now since I managed to run a batten through the luff and destroy the bottom 8" of the luff. All the used sails that I'm finding are crap, so I might as well just order new.

My '88 hull should be showing up this week and I have a possible lead on a '90 for the other side. I don't expect to to make it to nationals or anything, but it should be a good boat for recreational sailing and small races.

Besides, if I order brand new sails, I can just transfer them to a new boat when a 96+ appears in Ohio and I buy it.

If I order OEM white sails from my dealer, for a Hobie 16, are they going to have the following, or is it going to cost me extra.

* Windows
* Tell tale windows
*Tell tails
* Sail numbers
*Batten pocket protectors?

Secondly,
Are my old battens going to fit the new sails? I spent a good bit of time sanding and putting new caps on them.

Third,
It looks like 1200 + tax is about par?

I tried to contact the nearest dealer, but he hasn't returned my email or phone call. I'll probably end up ordering from the next closest dealer sometime next week, unless a decent used set comes along.

I bought a new jib for my 16 last week and it had everything except for the battens. I was shocked that they even included batten ties. If they had just thrown in a sail bag, I would be set.

I believe you need OEM if you plan on racing in Hobie events.

I bought a new set for my 1984 H16 2 years ago. The new 108136 replaced 82949. The quality and construction of the new sails is excellent. All of the grommets are stainless and have much stronger backing. A much better sail.

Windows-Yes

Telltales windows-No but black telltales on a white sail show through the sail

Sail numbers-Yes I got what the local dealer had in stock. I was told that you can order custom numbers but you would have to wait for a production run of sails

Batten pocket protects-I don't remember.

Buying both sets of sails, a sail bag was included. However it is only big enough hold the main.

$1,200 is in the ball park

Now I have to figure out what to do with the old white 82949 and the real blown out 66205 Carumba's. Any Ideas?

I hope this helps.

Jack

This is all good stuff to know. I am going to assume that the plastic protectors are on the luff. I'll call another dealer this week.

My big concern were the numbers. If I had to put them on myself they would end up lopsided. New numbers don't really matter.

You are going to send work out of the country to avoid paying taxes? That is not very MADE IN THE USA friendly nor will it help our trade deficit, nor will it help unemployment... That makes me want to drive my Toyota fast and reckless to Wal-Mart and buy some imported stuff!!!

Have you checked with a local sailmaker to see if they can repair it? The bottom 8" of the luff does not sound so bad and you'd be $1000 closer to that next boat.

I meant like California, Florida, Texas. In ohio, I would be paying like $60 in sales tax from the local dealer, so hasn't returned my messages.

When I've ordered small stuff from the Murray's catalogue I haven't had to pay a sales tax.

It's a 28 year old sail, so I am hesitant to have it repaired. The neighbor lady does upholstery, so I was going to let her try to sew it back together, at least to get me through this weekend.

Jack (see above) has a sail that he's looking for something to do with it. You guys need to hook up and recycle. The extra money you save can go toward a new(er) boat when available.

cool a cincinnati guy on here. I grew up in batavia on the 275 loop. As for sails if you can't find them locally and you want hobie oem sails try Jeremy at Surf City cataamarans. He's a really good guy to work with and gets you anything you need. He got me a new boat assambled and ready to race in a week. All i had to do was pick it up and go sailing.

Yeah, in good ol' Clermont County. I practically grew up at East Fork.

I actually live just past Milford and drive up 222 almost every day.

Been sailing elsewhere because the speedboats and Jetski's at East Fork don't seem to understand that I have right of way.

The one up on 28? I worked there in high school, circa 2002-2003/4. I think I quit in December of '03.
