OK, first off, it was blowing pretty good. Second, it looked like they had some issue with their big jib, looked like it was flogging or even dragging in the water as they were going over? Third, if they are racing cats in wind, somebody's going swimming. No big surprise there. I wish there was a better video of what was going on, on board, leading up to the bows going in.

But hey, that's cat racing. Not as -dry- as racing monos, not nearly as slow and boaring either... <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

The iShares Cup is a professional sailing event.
The boats are (mostly) fully sponsored and those business that are the sponsors should expect good competition and exposure for their company's. To be completive you must finish the race and hardware failure this far into the season is not good for the program.
It sure looks like a great gig! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

I think it's pretty exciting ... but I really fear that someone is going to get seriously injured on one of these capsizes. I've seen a lot of people barely hanging onto the upper hull and one day, someone is going to fall on the (previously) underside of the hull and land on the hull in the water...that's a long way to fall. Look at the guy in that video that fell on the safe side - that's a LOOOOONG way down to the water. Imagine slipping off the other side and landing on the opposing hull. As for the guys monkeying on the trampoline, at least the mast hit bottom :-)

I wonder if some short lifeline might be in order...like 1' long that extends horizontally from the hull about 6 to 12" down from the deck. It would really give folks something to hang onto when the thing goes over.

Tommy Hilger Nearly Stacks It. http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1454928681/bclid1405714006/bctid1608823286 Oh my god. How did they save that. And they got straight back to work after the recovery. Very impressive.

Did you see how far (Randy?) was over the side? Like Jake said, that would be a long fall. The rest of the crew were well positioned at the upper rear corner too. It looked very well rehersed.

Jeez! Talk about NASCAR! I'm wondering why they need bigger boats, the X40 seems fine!

I don't know about you, but this looks like it could be expensive...

In the interview, Randy said they were hit on a very strong section of the boat. He didn't mention any damage to Hilfiger, but the pics of Oman's bow look ugly.

As hard as it looks like they hit in that video (all the crew sliding forward), I'm amazed it wasn't worse than it was. If it can be repaired with duct tape on the water, it wasn't that bad.

Randy was on starboard obviously, so did he fly the red flag or do they have on the water umpires? <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

I'm pretty sure they have umps on the water.

Those sails are so amazing looking! I was just joking this weekend with a fellow sailor saying how cool it would be to have a solar electric main, and a flexable LCD jib!

Maybe in the near future! If any of you engineers can make it happen.. feel free to use my idea (all i want is 40%) <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

At a current cost of 25 to 50 cents per kilowatt-hour, solar power is significantly more expensive than conventional electrical power for residences. Average U.S. residential power prices are less than ten cents per kilowatt-hour, according to experts.

guess that could help on the other thread about solar....
