Posts: 164 The Netherlands (North West Eu... | Hi All,
Does anyone know if there is something as a online sailors dictionary ?
The thing I want to know is if there is something like a drawing of a catamaran with all the details pointed out.
I ask this because for some of us Europeans it is sometimes hard to find out what people mean when they are talking about “clamps” or halyard ( it took me quite a while to figure out both examples)
It would make it a lot easier to read the treads and respond properly.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Posts: 273 Key Largo, FL | Great idea, Rob! I could not find anything with a diagram of a catamaran and all its parts, nor could I find a glossary that also includes some of the parts that are used specifically on catamarans. If somebody out there would like to make a diagram, Rick and I can add the glossary from one of our books and update it with some of the more current terms, and we can make a page on our site for all that information. I did find a site which could be used as a format for what you are talking about, but it is a monohull site -- it has the glossary of terms, followed by a sketch of a monohull with all the parts. I presume it is kind of what you are looking for, except based on a catamaran. That monohull site is http://www.andrews.com/kysc/terms.htmlI think the Hobie U. textbook has a sketch, but I'm not sure how elaborate it is, and I couldn't find it on the Internet. Maybe somebody else will help us out here. I am glad you pointed out the problems with people from other countries understanding the English terminology.

Posts: 800 MI | Hi Rob measurement diagrams on the ISAF and Texel rating web sites --translated to English on the Texel site provide some of the basics . The Formula 16 web site is a good source also for basic information and discussion of new 16 ft designs more from an international perspective . ISAF web link http://www.schrs.com/schrsdiagrams.asp?id=boat ,-or just ask if you have a series of boat parts you would like the common terms for ,-or slang version terms for more often used here by causual Catsailors in N A . hope this helps Carl | | | Re: Sailors dictionary.

Posts: 284 Norfolk, VA | I saw a book a while ago called, "Learning to Sail the Hobie Way" which had a diagram of a Hobie with all the parts labeled. Granted, it was a pretty low-level sailing instructional manual, but it was worth the read. I'm trying to get my wife to read it, but she keeps hiding it in my office.
I feel your pain on the definitions, too. It took me a long time to figure out what a carribiner was!

Posts: 3,114 BANNED | I was working on an interactive sailing dictionary/diagram at http://www4.ncsu.edu/~tjpecora/sail/sailparts.htm# for my sailing club. I never did finish it though... and some parts got corrupted I think, but I think I'll go ahead and try to finish it before I leave school. | | | Re: Sailors dictionary.

Posts: 123 Santa Fe, New Mexico | I would love to see a dictionary online, but I am having trouble finding "hounds" on your site. An alphabetical listing would help a lot. I appreciate the effort you have put into this project. I hope you can find a way to collect the definitions. Good luck Greg H14, H16 | | |
