Just thought id start a thread on this topic as is was being discussed in an unrelated thread. I dont know why i chose sue as my name but it certainly has something to do with listening to Johnny Cash. A few people are upset by this. Funnily enough the people who seem most annoyed are Clayton104, Buccaneer and Tony F18.

Now am i being a little sensitive or does that seem a little hypocritical. Claytons name is defintely not clayton and im pretty sure that Buccaneer does not drive a ship and rape and pillage for a living, his name is not even gender specific. There are plenty of other examples. But do i care? No not really.

My opinion is that it does not matter what your name is. What matters is that peoples opinions are taken on their merits. Any other opinions on why or why not to use real names???

If you are going to post inflammatory comments and hide behind an alias, then yes, you should be forced to use your name, type of boat you sail, and any "afiliations."
I use my intials and people know who I am- fortunately or unfortunately.

Well if you're going to make statements about rules and boats atleast be involved in the class. When f-18 sailors talk about how the a-cat rules should be its somewhat annoying. But hey what do i know im just sitting here regelling a tiger dagger in california.

Not that I care, but how would you force somebody to use their real name?

Please fax me a copy of your Birth certificate, driver's license and Social Security Card.

Certainly people are not annoyed about names. Maybe they are annoyed about comments, but certainly by caustic and insulting postings or by having a hidden agenda.

Cheers,

Klaus

It is Unrealistic to ask / expect people to use their real ID info in a forum (yes, my name is actually Andrew Scott), however it is to be expected that people will feel upset and mislead if someone seems to be misrepresenting themselves in any way.

The anonymity of the web allows us to be less concerned about offending others (and any consequences) than we would fact to face and probably encourages us to say more "brash" comments that in public.

I didn't mean anything with my comment in the other thread, but you obviously have a very short fuse and are paranoid or something.
If you dont show your real name than thats fine by me.
(You know what, now I want to know your real name so I can ignore you if we ever meet in real life <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />).

Andrew,

I noticed you deleted your comment on the tramp question thread. I hope I did not offend you with the falling through comment.

From what I could see the two F18 sailors that made comments supported the A-cat class and how they were handling new developement. Now there was one F16 sailor that just went off on some crazy rant about how he's been right all along and nobody listens to him. I can't remember his name off the top of my head, heck I'm not sure he sails anymore.

Obviously forum members can't be made to use their real names but it sure as hell makes things confusing if they change their gender....???!

Mind you, I have to agree with the comments already made. It does not reflect at all well on any individual who compounds inflammatory posts with a hidden agenda while using an alter-ego, opposite gender, forum name.

If you're not prepared to stand by your comments/accusations under your real name then why should anyone take you seriously?

I suggest your actions do not reflect well on NACRA. I would certainly be thinking twice about the future of employee of mine behaving as you have done in these forums.

Agreed.

Perhaps it was because this individual wished to appear to be something he is not.

Maybe he wished to push his hidden agenda, while hoping to pursuade people this was an independant opinion and not biased by employment.

Sorry just to clarify I wasn't trying to attact anyone in particular. Just using a set of boat classes for an example. As I sail a F-18 Hobie it came to mind first and the A-Cat discussion as well as the Nacra-17/ 104 thing.
I was just saying that if i have no interest in a class then why should my opinion on class rules matter?

I posted forever under the login Sogncab. Why I changed to my name, I don't know.

Well, I guess I'm a fool too, because it is easy enough to find my full name. I appreciate people using their real names. It gives a person more credibility when they sign their name to a post. There are many here that have screen names and are easily identifiable. They are cool in my book. But for folks that intentionally hide their identity, I think it's cowardly not to identify yourself. Happy to be among the "fools", Brian McCarter

Why go along with him/her/them all the time. Just ignore the posts if you don't like them and discuss/comment on the posts you really think of as interesting.
