Greetings all!
Just wanted to introduce myself and say a little about the boat I just acquired.
My name is Jake and I live in Fairfield, California. I just picked up a 1970 H16. The boat seems to be seaworthy. The light blue decks on the are somewhat faded and oxidized, but there are no apparent leaks, I found no cracks and just a couple of soft spots. All of the delamination I discovered is aft of the forward trampoline pylon. The boat came with a serviceable main and jib and a Harken 5:1 mainsheet system (I don't know if this is stock or not). It also came with a brand new unopened Hobie vinyl mesh trampoline and a brand new PFD. The boat was free, I just had to haul it away.
I have been going over the boat carefully looking for items that need to be replaced/upgraded. Obviously, I need to install the new trampoline as the old one has many tears. I inspected and washed the sails. They cleaned up really well, and all that they seem to need is a replacement batten pocket protector on the mainsail (the one that bolts to the luff edge). The main has a small repair and two worn spots where the sail appears to have rubbed the shrouds. I inspected the shrouds, and they seem to be sound; no corrosion or broken strands. All but one of the traps is good, one has a broken strand and will need to be replaced. The rudders are old and in need of a cleaning, but they are not cracked as far as I can tell, and only have minor dings that I plan to fill. The crossbars seem sound. All the rivets are intact, and the traveler tracks are good. The boat has the old style jibsheet system. The tiller extension must have been lost at some point in time, as the previous owner made one out of pvc pipe. This will have to be fixed. I can't really think of anything else to look for. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am new to Hobiecats so I could really use the advice.

Sorry for such a long first post.

Find a someone through a local Hobie fleet to help you set up the boat, and let you know what you need. You may have to go to a regatta, but this is where you can get the best/most help from a bunch of people.

"WRX", is that referencing Subaru or Yamaha?

Also check out the Hobie Forums. There is a good FAQ's section on many of the basic repairs.

Thanks for the info Karl. I will try to find the fleet in my area. The WRX references Subaru. Although I had to sell mine after my wife and I had our third child <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The other thing I'm looking for is a trailer. If I can't find one very easily, then I'll be forced to weld one up for myself.

I'd think about replacing the shrouds anyway. I broke one in the gulf last weekend and had to try to lower the sails and get the mast and boom on board. Too many jelly fish around. I was lucky enough to get a tow from a guy on a jet ski. It could have been very ugly if my son had been with us, he would have been right where the mast fell. This is not something I want to repeat. I think cost for new shrouds was about $190.
Have fun with the "new Hobie"

Just brought home a new-to-us trailer. It used to belong to a SolCat, but now it belongs to us! It is a solid trailer with the 12" wheels as opposed to the 8". It towed with no problems from Socal to Norcal (around 450 miles).

Update: Installed my new trampoline today. Removed the old one yesterday and found that the rivets on the starboard aft corner casting were loose. Installed new rivets. I replaced the down haul cheek block on the mast as the sheave had disintegrated. I also installed a second-hand fiberglass tiller extension and a new extension yoke.
The only bad thing that I discovered today is that the upper gudgeon on the starboard side is broken and must be replaced. Hopefully I will be on the water by next weekend for a shakedown run.

Kent: I priced new standing rigging, hopefully I can afford it next month.

I hope you know that the cheek block riveted to the mast is for the jib halyard, not the downhaul.
