Check these results first:

http://www.fleet80.com/GilligansRun2008.shtml

Matt and his newest super crew are still at it.... winning races, that is. Great job McDonald family - first across the line? Did I read that right... wow, nice....

Anywho....

It has been two years since the USF16 Class Association was formed. We designed this group to be a "bare bones" operation with some logistical positions and some regional representatives knowing that the F16 concept would sell itself. The USF16 Class has grown into a nationally recognized group and continues to evolve into a formidable group of racers and social sailors. I'd like to thank the current Board for their hard work and diligence to the F16 cause:

Kirt Simmons, President
Tom Shannon, Vice President
Terry Back, Southeast Representative
Patrick Ragan, Northeast Representative
Eric Poulsen, West Representative

The accomplishments this group has achieved (regardless of their VP) has been considerable. I think these gentlemen have done an outstanding job.

Per the class association by-laws, it is time to elect a new board of directors or renew the election of standing officers. This is the official call for nominations. I, being the elections coordinator and not a nominee, will track nominations and track voting.

Per USF16 Class Association rules, only class members are eligible to nominate and vote in elections. Any USF16 member can renew at the International F16 website (www.formula16.org) with proceeds delivered to the USF16 Class Association. A few very diligent USF16 members have already submitted their 2008-2009 dues. I will coordinate with the International F16 Class Association to make sure they are recognized as a voting members (personal emails to follow this notice).

Please contact me with nominations at tbshannon[at]charter.net

Sail on……

Why can't we do them in the open? Eventually, they have to be discussed and voted on.

Aren't you meant to ask the nominee first?

I don't think I'd be too happy about class business being done on a fully open public forum. It'd be different if it were a 'member only' forum, I guess.

Even then, only nominations with a proposer and seconder, with the nominees consent, should be made.

Not if they're being drafted ! I was hoping we could have the election today and notify them next week.

We do things a little differently.

Pete is going to get this done!!

Maybe an edit to adhere to: nominees and interest are ok to post publicly (please speak with your nominee prior to posting) - but discussion of character, passion and abilities should be held in an appropriate setting. It is permissible to put your own name forward as being interested in volunteering for the class.

It was my HOPE that interested people would express their interest in volunteering for the class via this forum. We need some way to solicit names for discussion in order to put forward a solid slate of candidates.

It is also my HOPE that the current slate of representatives/officers express interest in continuing their duties; if that is their desire.

Pete - have you spoken with Gina and Joanna to confirm their interest? Floating names of people not interested is a dead end.

John - I agree that discussion of the candidates should be held in a "members only forum" - which today limits our option to email discussions. However; I believe the collecting of nominees (and gauging interest) can be done in an open forum.

I contacted them both a long time ago. Neither one is inclined to put themselves forward, but with a little coaxing, who knows? Both are very busy.

I don't want this to turn into a "boy's club". Both are very capable and I feel that should be recognized.

I'd be honored to represent the USF16 Southern Area -- if duly elected.

Tim: I'm already the chief BS artist, it wouldn't be right to hold two posts; particularly if neither one exists.

Terry: That's the spirit! You must be feeling better.

I agree with Pete, those 2 would be great.
But not to play devils advocate, if I remeber only the skipper/owner of the boat can have a vote in the class right? So I propose the both Gina and Joanna become the offical helm/owner of thier respective boats. Sorry Matt and Oley, but sacrafices must be done for the better of the class.

I heard from Joanna, she says no thanks (pleasant and courteous, just as you would expect). Nothing from Gina so I guess she is out as well.

So, while we're pondering what to do about officers, I'll throw this out.

Some of you may know I was the water boy at the last Alter Cup. That gave me the opportunity to speak with several F18 sailors. More importantly I had the chance to listen! It was surprising to me to hear how much anger there is concerning our 1-up/2-up rule. The very loud concensus is that we need to sail one or the other and not switch during a regatta. A few seemed to feel it was a permanent decision!

Probably if you tried to change crew during an Alter Cup qualifier (1 to 2 or 2 to 1), there we be a riot.

Comments?

Have we not had that discussion already? If you change configuration during an event, ask the jury for permission and get a notice on the noticeboard. That is the way crew changes are usually done, and I think that is fair enough. Jury should not allow it unless there is some kind of injury, urgent matters at home or work or planned (and noticed the jury about) a long time before the event (say a week). In my opinion it dont have to be more complicated than that. Switching configuration from day to day to match the weather is not something I would like. We can put provisions like this into our event rules.

Yes, we've had the discussion. I don't recall a concensus; certainly there is no formal rule.

Why not put up a poll and see what people here think.

1: Mix and match configuration as you like
2: No changes
3: Changes allowed pr the jurys discretion
4: Neither

This is something we should ask the GC to make clear in the event rules.

Any decent SI's will state, or refer to something like "change of equipemnt is not allowed without Ro / Ctte permission".

Changing your config from 1 to 2 up, or 2 to 1 up, is changing your equipment. You are adding or removing a Jib, Spi plus associated rigging and a crew.

I think any Race officer / mamangement team would just laugh at you if you turned up at a regatta (without prior approval, as was grated to Paul Warren at the 2007 event at Mumbles, when Anne could not race Friday) and said, Oh, I'll be racing one up today and 2 up tomorrow......

Have people in the states tried this? No wonder the F18 boys are spitting fire!
