I enjoy this forum, and appreciate all the input I've received. I've taken a few lessons on a "Pico" and seem to have a feel for sailing. I have been looking for an inexpensive Hobie, but all I've found in my price range is bent masts, ripped tramps and soft hulls..... The other day I came upon an old Solcat 18; the hulls are stiff the sails are in excellent condition and the tramp is in great shape. The rudders and daggers are in ok shape and the trailer is nice. I've sailed it twice and I really like it. I know it's not a speed demon, but it's classic and it's cool. Did I mention it's only $500? I would appreciate any input or knowledge anyone has concerning this boat, availability of parts etc. Anyone have an opinion? Fire Away!!!!

Where are you located? I sailed a sol18 for two years and sold it, and now the guy I sold it to is selling it for parts or whole. Had a great time on that old sol. so did he. but then he tore up the hulls. time to move on. Let me know what you need. I can get you in touch with him.
I never had a problem finding parts.

for $500 what do you have to lose? Oh yea, $500...

If you have sailed it and it 2x and all seems in order... i say go for it. Even if you only get 1 season out of it... it sounds worth it. I look at the cost to rent a plastic trimaran at $140 for 4 hours locally... so for the cost of 9 hours of rental.. you will own a boat.

I had a $400 TheMightyHobie18 that i sailed about 100 times. Sure i had to dump money into it after i cracked a rudder off, broke the rudder castings, shredded a sail... etc.. but it was all worth it.. Then i upgraded to a Mystere 5.5 and have been hemorrhaging money ever since.. i now need new main and jib... (OUCH$$$)

i have some parts for the solcat 18. down to a brand new undrilled rudder, a rudder installed, and the corss beams, some mast parts, boom...... call if you need anything.
Watch out for that mast, they tend to bend 6ft up from the base.....

Don't let anyone tell you a Solcat is not a fast boat.

Certianly there are faster, but $500 can get you a pourtsmouth rating of 74.9

It's a pretty predictable boat. I can say it certianly loves smooth water, and doesnt do swells or waves that well (robs alot of speed)
