Daniel,

You can see the channel 7 schedule in the attached link:

http://au.sports.yahoo.com/olympics/schedule/

Looks good for sailing 16th to 21st August providing they keep to the schedule. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Regards,

Peter

Actually I don't think that is Channel 7's schedule. It's just a schedule of the events. There is athletics, swimming and gymnastics on at the same time and I would expect pretty much 100% of channel 7's coverage to be there.

If we are lucky we will catch a few seconds of sailing, provided an Aussie wins a gold medal.

Channel 7 actually broadcast four separate standard definition channels plus a HD channel on digital, but so far there's no hint that they will use this to show some of the sports that 7 is not interested in.

Once again channel 7 has been allowed to buy the rights to the coverage and then censor it. Of course there's always SBS but I'm not holding my breath.

How did you find that Simon? Do you have a link?

It would be ironic if the only class that channel 7 broadcasts is the one that the ISAF axed.

They're also slated to show the women's board sailing final.

Not until today. Channel 7 broadcast the Tornado medal race this afternoon. I think Bundy and Ashby were lucky that there were no other Australian medals happening today so they got a lot more coverage than sailing would normally.

There were two windward-leeward laps and as they rounded the windward mark the first time and the first couple of spinnakers went up Channel 7 went to an ad break. By the time they'd shown enough ads the Tornados were back on the next windward leg. Unbelievable.

Anyway the Aussies had a lousy start, 8th at the first mark while the Spaniards they had to beat by two places were right up the front. They did well to catch up while the Spanish guys dropped back. In the end it was SPA 4th (Gold) and AUS 5th (SILVER), so they did good but not quite enough for gold.

TV coverage of sailing has been [censored] as usual. Not unexpected. Channel 7's cut away to the ads shows that brightly coloured spinnakers and high speed downwind legs are completely irrelevant to the TV producers. They might as well have been racing Optimists.

If there's a DVD from ISAF it might be worth buying just for the 49er carnage.

Thanks Tim,

I only managed to see a small bit of the 49ers the other day - Pretty spectacular, Not Tornados though. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> I knew that the sailing would get no coverage, It is after all the swimming games! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

After the second day, I knew I would not get to see my 2 favourite events so I boycotted Channel 7. Bugger 'em I say. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I have the Tornado race recorded on a PVR. I'm sure it will turn up on YouTube but if it doesn't I'll sort something out

For now here's a good recording of the 49er medal (carnage) race (Dutch I think - it's entertaining to make up your own subtitles).

Next regatta for the Mozzies is 6th & 7th September.

The pre-season training and social weekend at Hazelwood. Camping in the usual spot. I had better make a new thread for this. It's on the VMCA home page.

I reckon the lad launching his Optimist in the Coles ad scored more tv air time than the entire Australian Sailing Team.Congratulations to the entire team for a fantastic effort which deserved better coverage.

"The Tornado celabrations had a sombre note as this was the last Olympics for the class as it stands. This has been a constant source of anguish for the media here, who if they were asked to pick ten Olympic classes, would put the Tornado on the top of the list and then work out the other nine.".....says it all, really.

The start boat set a very port bias line because they elected to set the course very close to the breakwater (for spectators) and it would have been a very short starboard start. All boats start on port except the Greeks (AUS training partner) who split the fleet on the start hurting AUS the most. AUS had to dump main and traveller to avoid a collision and were left stalled at the start. The Greeks continued on Starboard ripping their main sail soon afterwards and retiring. AUS also break the mast rotation which hampered their upwind speed. They went left up the course while the fleet went right and AUS pulled back quiet a bit of ground.

ESP lead at the top mark with ARG in 8th (5 points behind AUS) and AUS 9th.

The fleet sets of on a starboard downwind, AUS sets and gybes making big ground, passing ARG, AUT, ITA and GER (who cartwheeled), moving up to 5th. ESP drop to 3th with AUS 2 behind. On the next upwind AUS remained in 5th but ESP dropped to 4th being passed by NED, with AUS in persuit.

ESP increased the gap from 17 seconds to 32 sec between AUS on the last downwind to finish 4th and taking Gold. AUS finish 5th taking Silver with ARG finishing 6th to take Bronze.
