hey guys,
Having spent the winter learning how to go forwards/backwards etc. on our new boat, the skipper and I have decided that we need some racing experience. Anyone around port phillip bay in oct/nov/dec this year feel like teaching two noobs how to race?
Or, can anyone suggest clubs that we should talk to in regards to sailing with other cat sailors?
thanks,
Alex

yeah... pretty much anywhere around the bay. we're based in Geelong, but can get to most places on the weekends.
we'll be at Elwood SC in December, I think.

Elwood SC is particularly strong for catamaran racing (A class, Dolphin & Paper Tiger). Port Melbourne YC is also very strong and so is McCrae YC. If you feel like a longer drive then Somers Y.C. on Westernport Bay is also very strong with Tornado, A Class, Hobie Tiger, Hobie 16, Hobie 14, Mosquito & Paper Tiger racing.

Would it be practical to do a distance race from Geelong, around past St Leonards and across to McCrae? Any problems with shipping traffic, currents, etc? It looks like about 40 miles (65 km). Over one day, big party, back the next.

How about several days to loop the bay?

I certainly can't teach you anything but I'm always keen for a sail! I'm a member at Port Melbourne and there are plenty of cats there... mainly Taipan 4.9 cat rigged! A few capricorns and now Greg Goodall's Viper seems to be there semi-permanently!

sounds interesting - we'll certainly try and come down for a few weekends in october. Are there any regulations regarding club membership to enter races, or do we just turn up?

As long as you are a member of a yacht club and have current membership with AYF the most if not all clubs allow visitor entry for up to 3 races per season.

Anything over that and you may be pushing your luck

Naturally, you must have $5,000,000 insurance coverage.
