I lived in Key West for 12 years and saw many western sunsets. I never saw the "green flash". I thought I did once or twice, but I don't think I really saw it. Everyone used to lie and say they saw it, but I think it is just a myth. Your eyes get watery looking into the sun and that coupled with beer and....substances.... can make anything look green for an instant....perhaps longer.

I'm with you Jack...many a sunset have a wiped the sweat from my eyes as I kept my eyelids peeled for the mythical green flash. I believe it's similar to all the snipe hunting I did in camps as a kid.

Now snipe hunting...that's a different story. They do exist and they are quite common near lakes in SC. Bring a bag and stick tomrrow and I will tell you where you can find one.

I have seen it: 4x in Hawaii in 6 years, 1x S. California, 1x over Lake Michigan: It has to be clear to the horizon, and only after rain has cleared the atmosphere. It lasts long enough to be certain- if you do NOT look at it until the critical last 3 secondsgreen-flash time as brightness declines.

I've seen it several times in the West Indies. If you watch in the right conditions you have about a 1% chance.

The right conditions are...absolutely clear horizon.

The times I've seen it have been well worth the effort, even better than seeing the Southern Cross.

Regards
Chet

Green Flash used to be a very popular training shoe which all the surfers (me included) used to wear, along with our Alder jackets. Nowadays I just like the look of Green Nikes!!

Well...damn. All this time I've been looking for the sky to flash green. I didn't know it was just the edge of the horizon where the sun was going down. Feeehhhh.

Well...damn. All this time I've been looking for the sky to flash green.

I've witnessed multiple alledged "sightings" over my lifetime and the one thing that strikes me is that they were ALWAYS preceded by libation and botanical substance activity.

However, I have no emperical evidence that suggests documented sightings have never occurred.

In fact, the photos that are linked to this thread are somewhat superior to the common Big Foot photos. There certainly may be some truth to this phenominum.

I'm just sayin'......oh well....never mind.

If you live in key West, you probably have never seen any thing in the past 10 of the 12 years. I have been in Key West many times and I have seen the Green flash many times and have seen it in the bay north of Key Largo and have seen it every day, when looking for it, in Hawaii. Elevation helps, when in Hawaii, I watched from an elevated porch, it helps to remove clutter on the horizon. To let everyone know what to look for: look at the last instant of the sun ball, disapearing over the horizon.
