Posts: 2,921 Michigan | Ours is silly anyway, since the F17 has such a soft rating, it's almost impossible for another class to win. (F17 has won the Area E Alter Cup for as long as I can remember.) Even Matt Struble couldn't win it last year on an F18.
I should take my 14 to the next one. It's rating is even softer than the F17's. I'd finish 20 minutes behind and still beat them on corrected time. kinda the reason it doesnt make much sense to go to the area D qual too! this year, at least

Posts: 334 Seattle,Wa | I went to the Area L Event.
We had 17 boats, mostly A-cats and F18's. Very good racing!
Success was based on better location, better communication, and partnering with an established event to get the visibility. And lots of effort on the Area L Representative: Mike Hensel.
The club has been in contact with us post-event and asking if we can do this again next year! Hobie Tiger 2003 | | | Re: Alter Cup Qualifiers

Posts: 3,906 Clermont, FL, USA | Please keep in mind, for the past several years Area D South has sent a minimum of two and in many cases 3 teams to the Alter Cup.
Just because a boat will be there with a soft rating is NOT a reason to skip a regatta.
It would take a lot for me to miss my area qualifier and I don't know if I mentioned it or not but I'm not really a fan of handicap racing.

Posts: 9,582 North-West Europe | Are the results available somewhere online ? I found this tidbit on the Velocity sailing website We just had the Alter Cup Qualifier for Area D North, where Nigel and Tammy took 1st place. However, Nigel is the defending Alter Cup champion, so Olli and Joanna will get to go instead. Blade F16’s came in 1-2 again for the umpteenth time in a row. Kind of sick of that happening — but what are you going to do?
Nice ! Wouter

Posts: 6,049 Sebring, Florida. | I chose not to attend because it's a 9 hour drive each way, that adds two days to the regatta days for me, and my leash isn't that long. Florida is such a long state, I think it should be broken up into 2 separate areas all by itself, and then GA, SC, AL, NC be a different area. I went to last year's regatta because it was only 2 hours away. 9 hours each way is just too long and if I lived 3 hours further south, in Miami or the Keys, it would be 12 hours! What about those guys? That's a lot of driving for what is supposed to be an "area" qualifier. It's even in a different time zone!

Posts: 3,906 Clermont, FL, USA | To chop the the Area further would require other areas in the nation to be combined and I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen. To be honest we are fortunate to have the two areas, so count your blessings Timbo.
I move the area qualifier every year to allow as many people as possible in the different geographic locations the chance to sail in the area qualifier. Yes, we'll lose folks further south this year like yourself but, it will bring those in the north and west into the qualifier. This will mix things up a bit and keep as much interest as possible in the area qualifier.
The Area D South qualifier for 09' comes back to the peninsula and the Clearwater Sailing Center is hosting. In 10' we will go back to the panhandle, maybe Fort Walton.

Jake, can you answer this one?

Huh, who has been all over the topic of getting the F16 USPN lowered for ohhh 5 years now ?
I've always said the F16's were significantly faster then the old USPN rating.
Give me some credit here.

Yes I understood that.
One of the points I tried to express is that I'm fair across the board here. If I bitch about the nacra F17 rating (which I hardly do in fact) then it is not mean spirited as I have bitched alot harder about "my own" rating being to soft.
I think it is everybodies responsibility to ensure fair ratings, that most definately included the sailors and classes themselves. I'm very happy with the USPN lowering of the F16 rating. It was the only fair thing to do with respect to the F18 and F20 sailors. The last one out is the indeed the Nacra F17.
Best of luck to anyone.
