Hi Thom
hi Dan
Interesting experiment ,-
Think Chris W first version of the rig was on a proa design .
Really interesting sailor ,-has some great cruising tris .
Talked to him at that time -86-87 and had a similar design --the same actually ,that I put on a very experimental planning hull cat platform .
Entered it in the 87 Worrell 1000 --called the World 1000 that year . Just a little too experimental but sailed -surfed downwind really well .
Mentioned it a few times in posts on planning hulls etc .
mast mounted on a traveler , though mine had a much taller A frame forward support . Wrapped small sleeve sails around the A frame also.
Other entries that year had adjustable sidestays ,
just put a 5 to one block system in place of chainplates with more lead to the wire stays . -You can block in the mast over quite a ways and accomplish similar effect,--watch out for those high windspeed gybes though ,-control in high wind is a real problem with any adjustable sail.
The tris use hydrolics ?
Other versions are there on several sailing speed record attempt designs
http://www.whbs.demon.co.uk/sr2/content_fr.htm The A frame concept has merits ,
Smaller cat designs ,-think its the catyak uses a small A frame support for a lateen type --sunfish type -sail for it .
Improved versions of this with canting ability could also be developed for any sized cat design. .
If you want to put more interesting design concepts together see recent posts on righting larger cats on this forum 3 or 5 pages back ,
Descibe an A Frame rig righting system for large cat design ,-seeing photos provides a clearer image of how this can be accomplished on a potentially faster lifting type rig.
-We really need some open races again for creative concept design along with a speed record trials run for all sailing craft and all types of cat design in N A.
Instead we have p-rating -handicap --THAT REWARDS SLOW BOATS AND SAILORS , with evan more handicap
Wonder why all the interesting designs are from overseas ??
We have no interesting racing here to develop it for.!!!
fun stuff
Carl
