I have lots of interesting pictures I could put on this forum when appropriate, but I have not been able to figure out how to do attachments. Actually, I know the mechanics of doing the attachment itself, but I don't know how to make the picture come out big enough so anybody can see it. I always get this message that says the picture can't be more than 100,000 bytes (whatever that means.

All the rest of you seem to know how to attach big, beautiful pictures. Somebody, PLEASE, tell me how to do it. And please keep the explanation really simple.

Mary, tell your webguy to lift that silly limit on the attachment size.

Make it a megabyte at the least.

Mary,

The message that it must not exceed 100,000 bytes refers to the amount of size your file uses on the disk. The easiest pictures to post on this forum are pictures that already exist on the internet somewhere, such as this one:

[Linked Image]

If you want to resize a picture, use a photo editing program, or whatever you use in for the print magazine, resize, then resave, then post.

I've also attached an image to this post, that you should be able to see by clicking on the attachment link to the left under my name. The picture was resized using a little program called "Picture It" that I have installed here at home.

Good luck!

Tim Johnson
P.S. I tried to keep it short and simple!

No Mary!

Don't tell your guy to make it a megabyte!

Two reasons:

1. There are still a lot of people with modem connections
2. You increase your chances of people doing stupid things to you with increased file size.

Speaking from experience as a TV, video and graphics guy, there's rarely a reason for a picture to be as large as megabyte when you're only going to view it on the average computer monitor.

Good luck,

Tim J.

Modems are irrelevant... the pictures do not show up in the thread, rather as a link under the post title. If modem users don't want to waste time, then thats fine. When I'm at home with the 'rents, I have to suffer on a 28.8 modem, it sucks, I feel your pain, but really, it hasn't anything to do with it.

File size is also irrelevant when it comes to people "messing" with you. I help run a site that maintains an online photogallery of MASS proportions. Over 300,000 page views in a day usually. We have never set a limit on the physical size of the image being uploaded but when we recieve the file, our server resizes it if the image is above 800x600 (maintaining proportionality of course). This way, nobody is denied the ability to post a picture, but at the same time, its not hogging up bandwidth or hindering the modem users.

Tim,
I finally managed to attach a reasonably-sized photo to a post, but I don't have a clue how or why it worked. I have always tried to do it the way you said -- I take the picture into Photoshop and resize it. But how do I know what the size is in bytes? It shows the image size in both inches and pixels. Somebody told me that you multiply the pixel height times the pixel width and that tells you how many bytes it is. But that can't be right, because when I did that for the picture I just posted, it came to over 430,000.

You said the best way is to take a picture off a website, but I don't have any way of putting a photo on a website. Do I have to get my own website just so I can put pictures on it just so I can put them on the forum? That doesn't make sense.

photoshop tells you the size of the photo in mb or kb vs. the image quality (i usually go with 60 quality) when you choose "save for web".
photos don't need to be much bigger than 600x600 pixels (found under image size) to be viewed on my screen.
a jpeg made like this is generally around 600k, which i think is short for kb.
ebay has links to sites which will host your photos for display on the internet.
hope this helps.

Mary,

If you browse to the image file on your computer, click on it with your right mouse button. In the menu that pops up, go to 'properties'. In the resulting window it will tell you the size, in bytes, of the file in question.

Jake, I know how to find out the size AFTER I have saved it, but what I don't know is how to determine the size in bytes at the time I am sizing it in Photoshop. All I see in Photoshop is pixels. How do I figure out how many bytes?

And why can't I figure out how to ask the right questions?

I have read my Photoshop manual, and all it says on this subject is that, "The file size of a digital image is measured in kilobytes or megabytes and is proportional to the total number of pixels in the image." The more pixels per size, the bigger the file. Of course! But where do I find how this translates into bytes without saving it and then going to Explore and checking the details on that file and then going back again to Photoshop and making an adjustment and then doing that whole process all over again?

Is my problem overly simplistic for all of you who already understand how to do all this stuff on computers?

Maybe I should just ask it this way:
If you are going to use a picture from one of your in-computer files, not on a website or anything, and you want to make it the maximum possible size as an ATTACHMENT to a post, do you save it as a .jpg file, and what resolution setting do you use and what pixel sizes do you use?

I am REALLY sorry to be so stupid about this, but it is important that I learn how to do this because I have probably more sailing photos in my files than almost anybody, and it would be nice to be able to share them once in a while.

See that big, beautiful picture? I just checked it's properties, and it is 55.88 KB (57217 bytes), well under the 100,000 byte limit.

Going to 1 Megabyte is probably not a great idea. It would eat a lot of resources, slow down viewing time, and not add much to what people can see on the screen.

Jonathan

Jonathan,
What big, beautiful picture? I can't see anything at all. I am starting to get a complex. Now not only can I not post pictures, I also cannot see pictures other people have posted.

Addendum. Okay, maybe you are talking about the photo that Tim posted. That is a different situation, because he was including it within the text. I have not yet gotten to that advanced level. I am just talking about ATTACHMENTS. Let me take it a step at a time here.

Aaaa...O.K. I've got photoshop 6.0 and in the save dialogue box after you choose to save your image as a jpg has the information you are looking for (see attachment). I also have the option to 'save for web' and it gives you the size and even the download times on different connection types.

Calculating image size by pixels works for images like TIFFs that are not compressed. A jpg file compresses the information in an image to make the file smaller. As a simple example, if four pixels side by side are the same color, a jpg only saves it as one piece of information instead of four. A tiff would save four pieces of information regardless.

Jake,
And here I thought you guys were all smarter than me. Now I find out that it is just that you have software that tells you this stuff.

I have Photoshop 5.1, and it doesn't tell me any of those things you mentioned.

Thanks! I feel better, now that I know all I have to do is spend some more money to get smart. Rick loves any excuse to upgrade me. Usually I resist vehemently, but this time I am going to actually ask for it.

Rick now informs me that he has Adobe Photoshop 7.0 in his computer and can install it on my computer. I guess that will make me 1.0 smarter than the people with 6.0.

Solution to my problem is even more simple than I could have hoped. Thanks, Jake. Without that graphic of your "save" window for Photoshop, I never would have figured it out.

Hi Mary,

You're going to love the web oriented features that you'll find in Photoshop 7.0. While you likely are aware of the considerations for producing images for the web, I'll throw out a couple of considerations for other users.

One of the more common reasons for images gobbling up disk space is the resolution of the picture. If you plan to print your photos, you need higher resolution images, but for the web, you only need a resolution in the 70 to 80 dots per inch (dpi) range. In Photoshop, once you get to the Image Size dialog box, the first thing you should do is type in a resolution of 75. If the original resolution of the image was 150 dpi, changing to 75 dpi will reduce the image to about one quarter of its original size.

Next, look at the width and height dimensions. Type in a width measurement and the height will automatically change if the Constrain Proportions box is checked.

The photo that Tim included in his post earlier in the thread is 700 pixels wide by 575 pixels high. I typically don't produce photos for the web much bigger than 800x600. With larger images, it forces viewers who have lower resolution monitors to have to scroll in order to see the photo.

Hope you enjoy the upgrade to v. 7.0

OK, fine, it's all irrelevent, but hey man, space is money, and it just isn't necessary for everyone to have the option of posting files that are up to a megabyte in size.

Maybe if you want it to be that large, you should buy Rick some additional hard drive space!

Cheers!

Well, they wouldn't be posting a meg file. Thats the point. The server takes care of the size and dimensions so they aren't all that hard on all the users. Say I have a HUGE 3200x2400 photo (3.2megapixel) of a race start. I want to attach it. I just upload it as-is. The server takes the file once its received and converts it to a dimensionally-proportionally-equivalent 800x600 which would theoretically be 1/4th the size. So instead of loading up the server with that huge file, its just the small one now.

Plus, if this site is hosted, Rick doesn't need any extra harddrive space, he needs more money to purchase more space from his provider.

Okay, now I have more questions:
What is a server, and what is a host, and what is a provider?
Sorry, but you are the one who used those terms.
Believe me, I wouldn't bother people with these questions if I had somebody in my house who could answer them.

Mary,

The "server" is the machine that the web applications reside on. "Hosting" means that you don't have your own servers, but your web site / applications are being "hosted" by a "provider" who owns the servers and provides support.
