we managed to break a spin pole a couple of weeks ago.. trust me it wont break like that again.... anyway I have the replacement from AHPC but it is not cut to length.
my old pole is a bit mangled so the best guess i have is 3550mm.
so can some one measure a standard one for me? also is there any advantage to altering the length?
cheers
Dazz.

B.2.3. BOWSPRIT The bowsprit shall be made of extruded aluminium profile of constant section. The length shall not be greater than the distance, measured in total from its attachment point from the centre of the front beam to the vertical line touching the most forward part of the hull, with the bowsprit measured when level to the deck of the catamaran, plus an additional 800mm. The bowsprit shall be fixed and approximately on the longitudinal centreline of the boat. See diagram. The forward end of the bowsprit shall be rounded and blunt.

can you check the f-18 site for the rules and diagrams. I tried but couldn't post here the diagram. Oh to be back in Hobart I miss it. http://naf18.com/wordpress/?page_id=26

prior to the beginning of our sailing season I replaced the whiskers as they were looking a bit frayed. tied figure of eight knot inside the pole (behind the end pole fitting) slowly the knot crept and eventually came undone.
We had sailed through close to 30 knots with the kite up and no dramas. when it let go it was about 8 knots of breeze.
to fix the problem I now have 1 rope for both sides, it comes into the end cap fitting, knot, another knot then out the other side making it impossible for the knot to come undone again.
does anyone else have a cap pole for a second opinion? At this stage I'm going with 3645 and double checking its legal.
Cheers

Do like the infusions do and rivet 2 sadles onto either side of the pole, the get some wire bridles made up, either extactly to lenght or a bit short si yiu can tie them off with string. Then put a block on the ond of kite pole for your tack line.
If I am right, the Capricorns have been delivered with 2 different pole lengths. My first Cap (built in 2004) had a shorter pole. When I replaced it two years ago / in 2006, my dealer (Sailcenter / The Netherlands) explained that the new models were delivered with slightly longer pole lengths as the F18 rules had changed in the meantime. The old rules required that the measurement point was the top side of the bow (deck level), while the new rules suimply mention the hull (no specific level) as the measurement point. As the bows of the Capricorn are inverse, this now allows the use of a slightly longer pole.
I would follow what GBR6 has said earlier (look at the manual).
I now have 2 brand new blanks (just in case) and a testing pole I put together to sail with.
Still have not cut the new section to length yet because I am not convinced I'm doing the right thing.
So I got the test pole, set it to level with the deck of the boat. Tied two pieces of rope to the pole, weighted them. Sighted one of the ropes between the bows at the forward most point of the bow. I then measured to the rope i dropped off the forward section of the spin pole.
800mm
my pole came out at 3450mm
I dont see how I could be that far out in the measurement.
... do you think, the pole has to be on deck level to be measured? I 'd expect that it gets measured in the position you sail it - which would result in more length. I forgot to mention that the 3600mm I measured is from my 2007 Capricorn. Kai
Interesting diagram, where did you get this from? I measured the pole without the cap = bare tube length to make it more simple for you. Do you want the length over all?

I don't doubt your measurement of the pole baltic, in fact thats the length i have made my new pole. can always cut it down if some one says anything. certainly a lot harder to add it back on!!!
im just curious to see if you can see how it fits into the f18 rules.

You think it's too long? I bought the boat used about two months ago, it's from 2007 and the pole does not look like it has been replaced = it was supplied like this from AHPC. Of course I might have made a mistake during measurement, I'll do it again. However, the boat is in winter-storage, I have the spinnaker-pole in my warehouse only so I can't check if it fits in the class rules - what I still suppose.
