Now that the Inter 20 is no longer the selected boat for the Worrel, how many owners are still racing the boat one design? I know of only three boats in the SF bay area, and have never seen them out together as a class. Local multihull group allows us to participate using PHRF (-88) What's the need for one design sail rules? Have tried to e-mail Elliot for a quote on new jib and shute, no resonse. Would like to see if another sail maker is interested. Heard some Inter 20 members were considering droping the single mfg. portion of the sail restrictions. Any one hear more recent status regarding one design class plans for Inter 20's?

Hi Bruce

Inter 20 sails are interesting ,-
I really like the quality ,-and Performance cats are great ,
the Natls and local cat dealer support are also great .-

but ,--there are 3 or 4 jib versions now -
at least 3 spin versions also with different shapes -
We used one of the older versions last year and ere at a noticable disadvantage with it . If your not aware of this it is disturbing in a ""one design "" -

-Proposed rules for a Formula 20 class based largely on current I-20 specs ,-that would allow any sailmaker -jib spin etc to be used when replaced . -
see rules on the F-20 list -

It will be a while yet before Formula concepts catch on here in N A ,-but think the demand in the 20s is on the increase for Formula type racing ,--as the 18s become more and more popular 20 owners--those left --- will wake up to the benifits of it for sailors.

Plan to be in San Diego next weekend ,--the 27th -
is there a good place to charter cats or larger sail craft in the area ,--any recommendations ,--
want to take my brother -sister and father for a spin around the coastline for a day ,-

thanks -
Carl Roberts

Carl, I know you have spent a lot of time (and keyboard time) on the topic of the formula concept. My thought on it is this. No matter how you slice it one boat will rise to the top and be THE boat to have. The concept lives already. It's called one design.

Just my opinion for what it's worth.

Have Fun
Mike

Carl,

Performance is a good company, I love the boat and hope others feel the same. Just trying to get people to bring their boats out to play. Have heard some of the rumors regarding different "one design" sail shapes produced by Elliott/Patterson over the years. Yes I'm interested in racing my boat using the formula 20 rules. Any othe Inter 20 owners out there?

Regarding San Diego; contact Mission Bay YC http://www.mbyc.org/flt-mutihull.htm (Multi-hull Fleet Captain - Mike Hammond (619) 258-5467) or Alan Thompson. The San Diego Cat fight is April 13th and 14th.

I have never had a problem with ordering sails thru the dealer. EP will not quote direct since each dealer decides his own fate with the margins...

There is a small and growing fleet of I-20's up here in Seattle, although no YC will allow us to race with them (Corinthian Yacht Club) of Seattle refuses to let us in, we as a fleet are racing with the local Hobie fleet and are starting some local races as well...

So far there has been no need/desire to change sails....like most of you, I to am interested in the Formula concept...

Get those Inters up here on a road trip and sail in Seattle for a few days...

The New England fleet is up to 10 boats for 2003. Some more active than others.

Hi Mike

Think that is a temporary state ,--just as the latest hottest class is now ,--Javs ,--that continues to change and evolve ,--
Formula would be no different ,-catsailors could keep the same boat and update and modify it periodically rather than having to buy a new """one design"" to stay competitive .--

When I raced H-18s in huge fleets back in the 80s you had to have a new boat and sails every 2 years or did not stay competitive ---I owned 5 different H-18S ---WHEW !!!

FORMULA WOULD BE A VAST IMPROVEMENT --

Basic philosophy of the individual comes into play ,--
are catamarans about sailing at high speed and developing better sailing craft through racing and the development of better gear rigging sails and hardware set-ups along with sailing skills ---

or do you want all improvement -development to stop with your boat and supposed one design ---with its ever changing sails -updates and new mfg rule based boats and gear only --???--

O D can work but look to A Class and Tornados which allow development ,--and A s which allow any builder ,--they are by far the most interesting and advanced cats ,--but no chutes ,-
From there it is a matter of degree of change one wishes to accept ,--all continue to change ,--

If you want no change ,--well race the old floating bathtub type dingies at 5 top speed ,--its fun but ,--

For me cat ailing is the challenge and quest of developing skills and a boat to compete ,---each year I try in the Worrell to compete with the best ,--it is the ultimate test of seamanship and a great adventure ,--

to each their own ,--but do not hold others down sighting limited veiwpoints of a particular o d as a model for all .
there is so much more .-

have fun too
Carl
