Hi all,

Have kept an eye on the reports with interest.

Congratulations to champions and those who took part.

Will be aiming to have 3 down from Qld to next nationals.

Someone has to give Bob a run for his money, how many Nationals is that for him now?

Cheers,

Drew........Furr_ball........Mosquito 1635

I'll start doing a report here - race-by-race. Otherwise it'll never happen - and the memories are fading fast!

I'll start with the Invitation race as it was fairly memorable. About half the fleet launched in a Southerly that looked like the upper end of the Mosquito's range.
There was a fair bit of hanging-back so as a result in the MK1 start only Bob and Darryn were there. Neil Joiner, Peter Nikitin, Gary Johnstone and myself were not far away - but not realising the start had already happened. Gary Johnstone was the first to realise that Bob and Darryn had nicked off and left us behind. The rest of us followed.

As we got to the windward mark the wind had already increased, and I think Garry came to grief on the first reach. The waves were big (1.5 to 2m) and nosediving was a problem. I burried the boat back to the centreboards while on trap, but the footstrap stayed put and the boat popped out again eventually. Quite a buzz! Darryn I believe also has a swim but didn't waste much time getting it back up.

I got to the leeward mark, still well behind Bob and Darryn and figured I'd seen enough (it was only an invitation race) so headed in. Peter Nikitin was close behind with Neil just behind him and they followed suit. By now the wind and waves were way bigger than a Mosquito should be sailed in.

Bob and Darryn were the only ones to finish that race. Bob won and Darryn had two swims for a 2nd.

In the Mk2s the only one left standing on the final leg was Philip Warren-Smith, whose luck finally ran out as they went for a swim. On righting the boat it rolled over and Philip and his crew (Anthony) lost the boat. After a while they were picked up by the rescue boat and returned to their boat. They were probably fortunate that they were the only ones still going at the time so had the full attention of the rescue boat.

Anyone else have any comments on the Invitation race?
Stay tuned for race 1!

Race 1 - Monday

This was a morning race and the wind was coming from the North as we launched. This meant a run down to the start line. There was maybe 10-12 knots, so we started the race semi-trapezing, and all was going well into the first reach. As far as I can remember in Mk1 there was Bob, Darryn, Ben (Clarke), Peter (Nikitin), and Neil in the leading bunch that got away. As we sailed down the first reach the leaders ran into a shift which turned the reach into a beat (about 120 degrees). The rest of the fleet could see this coming so it made for some interesting tactical decisions which way to go prior to the change. The rest of the race was a bit of a soldiers course with only one more windward leg and loads of fairly slow reaches, and Darryn came out on top in front of Ben and then Bob.

Somebody must be able to remember more about this race. What about the MK2s?

All,

The article on the Nationals should be in print for all to read in the next issue of Multihull World magazine.

I have just finished proof reading it and they have given us 5 pages in full colour....so hope it gives all the info they want, the events and most of all the enthusiasm to be at the next one.

Enjoy.

David.

ps, hoping to have a few more article before the end of the season and thanks to thos e who helped get this one to print.

I have added some more adjusted and cropped photos of the racing to this photo album

Wallaroo Nationals Photo Album

They were taken by a Wallaroo club member and the originals are probably on the SA Mosquito site.
