I have bronchitis and feel like ****! Somebody tell me a funny story to cheer me up! Something like: what's the largest number of people you ever jammed into a motel room (regattas only), or who has the stinkiest wet suite you ever smelled?

8 people, and you couldn't use the shower because all the gear was in there. So, that would be 8 unwashed folk. I was single then, and early 20's... smile

At an after-regatta party, two competitors (on many fronts):

Competitor 1 sees hot chick, grabs her butt;
Competitor 2 is the first thing hot chick sees when she whirls around and thus Competitor 2 gets slapped.

And dass da trut', mais yeah...

We packed 5 people into Trey's small cab pickup truck for our first Tybee 500.

We also slept 5 plus his grandparents in the RV the whole way up the coast. That was nuts.

Not quite a clown car story, but my worst hotel memory was from the 1997 Atlantic City boat show (all sailboats).

We had 4 guys in one really cheap room, two double beds. The worst part was, this was a place that probably charged by the hour. This was my first trip, the other three guys had done this before (so they knew what to expect). One of them brought a sleeping bag so he didn't have to touch the sheets. At first I laughed at him, then I became jealous.

Yes, the shower was accessible, but I think you got dirtier when you used it...

My most interesting hotel story was coming back from MWE in Tampa (1998-ish). We had two H16s, double-stacked behind a Ford Bronco II. The tranny gave up the ghost in NC. We were able to limp off Route 95, and into a truck repair shop.

Conveniently(?), there was a hotel across the street, next to a "gentlemen's" club, which served actual meals. The hotel, being where it was, was what you would expect. The food was decent, and the scenery was OK, but paying a $10 cover charge to go in and eat 2-3 times in the same day was getting old. The girls started to ignore us when they figured out that we really only were there because we had to be (and weren't tipping)...

ok... wasn't a regatta.. but i crashed a wedding reception in west palm about 10 years ago. she (the bride) was a high school pal and said we (another female pal from HS) should crash it. It was a great reception... After they closed the bar... we stole the desert cart and were invited to continue the party in the honeymoon suite... somehow, and for no reason we got about 25 people in the shower stall (still dressed, with drinks in hand)... it was silly fun...

Taking the scenic way while towing my F-18 to VA Beach via Rt 17 and limped in on fumes to the only gas station for miles that also served beer and was the post office. Locals sitting in front of the station recognize that it is a boat of some sort and promptly asked, "Can you fish off a that"?

Pulling out of the first Spring Fever, pulled in to get gas at a station/barbecue joint. Old timer in a 4x4 looks at the I20 and asks me and Glenn Holmes "Is that one of them there gyrocopters?"

Pulling my p18 to my cabin in MI, I stopped for fuel. While filling my truck, the lady at the pump next to me looks at me and without cracking a smile asks... "going fishing"? I really wasn't sure how to respond. Here's your sign.

Most people in a motel room: Not sailing, but on a ski trip, we packed 6 into a mom-n-pop type motel for 3 nights. 2 full size beds, a stand up shower and about 10 square feet of floor space. crazy

Stopped in to get a bite at a diner just outside of New Orleans late one evening. Two kids walked up admiring the two boats, one of course knows everything. One kid asks but where is the motors (not engines of course), the other replies "its inside, the shaft comes out here, (Points to the drain plug holes), dem things go really fas, I seen um on TV!"

Another time, a friend pulling his Stiletto gets asked "are both of them boats yours?"

Oh, and 23 in a small house near the beach in Mississippi. Of course the house is no more... Katrina casualty.

Cats and fishing?.

Off East Beach, Galveston TX, I caught a 53in, King mackeral while trolling with my Prindle 18-2. Using a Penn reel, heavy line and steel leader.

Insterestingly enough, he was foul hooked behind the dorsal fin, took over an hour to get him in. Huge fish. I'll try and find the picture and post it.
To date, this is the largest fish I have ever caught. I've been fishing when the winds and seas are light for years now.

Probably bacterial, no meds except otc sleep aids. Quit smoking in '74, the last big "recession" I went through. Got married in September and promptly lost my job.

Interestingly enough, I finally found a job driving a truck for a little company called Halliburton.

Do I need to point out the irony here.

Back when I was in college, one of the fraternities had rented this small bungalow in Margate NJ across the street from Maloney's Bar. We staggered from bar to bar ... by the time we returned to the house both bedrooms were full wall to wall ... someone was sleeping in the tub .... the living room was a "carpet" of people sleeping everywhere. I tried to find a place on the floor in the living room but people kept on stepping on me as they went to the bathroom .... I finally got up, went into the kitchen ... crawled under the kitchemn table and curled up in a beach towel and slept on the dirtest/stickiest lanoleum floor I had ever seen (you expect frat boys to clean???). Never knew how many people slept there that night, 15 ... 20 ... 25 ... 30????

Then there was the time in Wildwood NJ that I left a bar and slept on a telephone company switch gear box behind said bar .... I awoke in the morning in a drizzling rain when the sun came up.

So while "Margate" had the most people involved ... that switch gear box was small, cold, hard, wet and damn uncomfortable .....

The Good ol' Days .....when one was young and foolish.

PGP,
If you feel like a trick ran over you, (no pun intended), achy muscles, Upper repiratory symptoms, you may have copme down with the flu. (even if you had a flu shot earlier this season)

Either way, Good luck on that, you'll probably be OK.

If you have trouble breathing, with wheezing, with or without fever, a trip to the ER may be in order.

I do hope you feel better.

I appreciate your concern, thank you. This is a regular occurrence for me, about every other year. Lots of fluids, bed rest, something for fever as necessary.

My wife and I were going to a Hobie division regatta, second morning. I see two Hobie sailors in a 50 cent car wash, one against the wall like he's being frisked, getting hosed down by the other guy. "Shower time".

Four guys in a hotel room, one guy forgets "sleepware" and borrows shorts from me, farts in them all night and then askes me in the morning if I want them back.. sick...No thanks.

Hope you feel better....

Another one or two. Hopped a flight across Lake Michigan to sail back in the Queens cup. Just a carry on and a life jacket. Passengers and crew sure looked at me funny with a life jacket wrapped around the carry on.

I helped my sister sail to the Bahamas from Hollywood FL. My brother and I caught a flight back to Ft Lauderdale and had a local pick us up at the airport & take us to my car back in Hollywood. She met me for about 5 minutes before the trip. When I call her to pick us up she tells me to stand by the curb and somehow stand out so she knows who to pick up. So I stand at the curb with my sailing hat and life jacket on. It worked like a charm but no one would get near me on the curb.
