I could only find the ForeRunner on there...not the Foretrex. The Foretrex is the one with the sailing start timer...still, though, that's a good price.

I ended up with the forerunner by accident off ebay... I have only used it a few times but didn't really noticed anything wrong.
But I have never used the foretrex.
Does anyone know if there are any other differences betsides the timer?
For $100 i'd def. by another forerunner

I have yet to use a GPS sailing. Not really worried about distance racing or navigation, just using it to see speed and maybe do some comparative tuning. Would you guys recommend this unit? Seems a great price.

Re-built/Re-manufactured off of E-bay for $65, beats it. I got 2.

There is a difference between the forerunner and the foretrex. unfortunately i found out the hard way. i bought a forerunner off of ebay because the seller thought they were the same thing! i got my money back but the difference is the forerunner doesn't have kts as a unit of measure. i don't think they have a timer either. in my opinion the the foretrex 201 (rechargeable battery) is the best sailing gps out there. that takes price into consideration of course. the velocitek puck looks good but has a big price tag. you really have to consider losing this thing. I've tried all sorts of different methods of using it. everything from tying it to the boom, wearing it as a watch, attaching it to my crew, etc. no matter what you do you have a pretty good chance of losing it in a spill (i have lots). if you drop 300-400 for a puck then you should have enough disposable income to absorb it. most catsailors are how do you say, "thrifty" sailors. SO, if you like jonesing over your current VMG or just get excited knowing that bending your aft leg gets you .1 kts faster then get a foretrex 201. surf ebay waiting for a $65 deal and collect a couple of them so when you go jungle gybing and catch your gps on a side stay(adios) you don't feel so much remorse!!! cheers!!!!

I think I finally have a good solution for wearing a foretrex and not losing it. 1) taking a page from Todd Hart's book, glue the foretrex to the strap behind it using Windshear or some other multi-purpose permanent adhesive. 2) take an extra strap (I've lost three, so I have a couple of straps) and put it on your wrist before you put on the foretrex. The extra strap keeps the foretrex from sliding down your wrist and extending over the back of your hand. I keep losing them when I put my palms out on the trampoline and bend my hand backwards. I raced the a-cat all week and the 20 for the following weekend and it survived very well.

how do you get the recharge adapter on if its glued to the back of the 201? or how do you open the battery back if its glued? forget about global warming these are the real questions that intrigue me!!!

The Windshear(or Aquaseal) is a thin layer. The charger flexes over the extra thickness. As long as you don't slather it in there you'll be fine. I wore 1 (Foretrex not forerunner)for the entire Tybee and after losing our 76s the foretrex was our main navigation tool(not that it's hard to keep land on your left,but...) There's a couple of sellers that sell the refurbed ones on E-bay. I had one lock up ,but after the battery ran down it re-set itself and seems to be fine.

I put my charge adapter on while the Windshear dried. It fits just fine.

Todd,
Mine has locked up a couple times too... I forget which combination of buttons it is, but if you push two at the same time it shuts down. When I powered it back up, it worked fine. I've used a foretrex 201 strapped to either side of the boom for the last two tybees as well as all the other racing I've been doing and love it.

I thought about the boom thing too, but I switch between pages sometimes so I like to have access to it from the wire.
