Its windy in NJ today and unfortunately, the hobie was on the beach, wind grabbed it, flipped it and the mast hit a rather large tree...no damage to the tree but the mast snapped. Its an older hobie used for recreation and I'm having a difficult time locating any sites for replacemnt mast. Apprecaite any guideance..tks!

Do you know anyone at Sandy Hook Catamaran Club?

There were a number of old Hobie masts piled in the weeds when we were there last July. I'll bet someone there can tell you if one of them could be bought.

Where's Trey when you need him?

I know someone with a similar story regarding his Hobie. I'm sure he'll chime in soon.

I doubt you'll have to look very far to find a used Hobie 16 mast in NJ. I think your best bet would be to get the message out to Division 11 - probably through the Yahoo Group, you can send a group email out that will be seen by a lot of folks in the area. Someone's bound to have one lying around.

I have a stack of masts for sale. Hobie 14 with and without comptip in black and silver. Hobie 16 masts, no comptip, either color.

Hobie 14 and 16 booms in both colors, too.

I also have 1 new and 1 used comtips for 16s and one new comptip for a 14.

Seriously--I have like 20 masts. They need to go.

Booms, $50-100
Masts $200-350
Comptips $100-200

Brig,

Your request was posted on the Div11 Yahoo Group today by Rich McViegh.

If you do not find a H16 mast in NJ, then I would also recommend calling Dan Berger in Virginia Beach .... he's the East Coast Used Parts man ... nice guy ... I've gotten several different parts from him over the years.

Brig,

I heard you have spoken to Mr George Kuney of Div11 ... great ... that's excellent that someone was able to help.

Now for a little advice ...

You need to tie your boat down ... and I do not mean w/ those screw-in "Dog Spikes", OK. Those are useless in any kind of decent wind. Here are several ideas.

Find you nearest "Arborist Supply House" and purchase some "Ground Anchors/Tie-Downs". They come in multible sizes ... for dirt I would recommend a 24"lg w/ 4" disc ($6-8ea), for a sandy beach I would recommend a 36"lg w/ a 6" disc ($8-10ea). I use a 36"lg breaker/wrecking bar and a piece of pipe (for additional leverage) to spin the anchor into the ground (you will get dizzy). We generaly use (2) ... one under each crossbar as the boat can "spin" if you use only one. Somepeople use (2) w/ one on each side of the boat and tie the trapeze wires to the ground anchors.

Or you can use a shovel and dig a 2'deep hole and bury a cementblock (or old tire) w/ a tiedown line attached.

Remember you tie the boat down not to protect the boat .... but to protect everything else "AROUND" the boat.

I just recieved word that a bunch of small boats at my Yacht Club got "tossed" around the other day also ... so you weren't the only one ....
