My dogs have souls, I wish they were cats, but cats are not as cool as dogs. That does not mean that monos are cooler than cats. Cats are cooler. But not as cool as dogs. Dogs are smarter than cats but cats are way faster than dogs and mono's. Vey complicated.

I saw on another website (can't find it again) the pets that various people in activities own. Sailors are said to have more cats than dogs. Looking at my little circle of friends I find that completely WRONG.
I have a dog. NEVER a cat. What does everyone else have?

I had a dog once,(wiping back tears), he was awesome. A Yellow Lab, with Yellow eyes-(part weimaraner).
Anyways, when I had my P18-2, he would be my crew. I could never quite figure out how to get him to trap though. Instead, when we heated up, he always instinctinvely went to the high side, and would hang one paw over the rail to keep himself up there when we flew the hull. (while he was laying on the tramp.) I even made my own Life jacket for him out of some neoprene and 1 inch lacing. He was an awesome swimmer, as labs are. This was only to be able to bgrab the lacings across his back and pull him back on if he ever fell off. I tested it out, and it worked. I never had to use it though- he never fell off while sailing!
This was at East Beach in Galveston (site of the 2008 NA F-18's). The Huge power catamarans, loaded with tourinst/fishing would pull up to the end of the jetty's to fish, up to ~70 people on board. They would get such a kick out of wseeing my and my dog 'Bock' flying the hull trpaping and dog hanging, past their boat! They would get out their cameras, etc. This happened probably a dozen or more times over a few years. I know we are in a lot of peoples 'fishing trip pictures'. I sure miss that dog, he passed about 15 years ago.
I never owned the feline variety of cat.

Two labs, Jesse James and Almonzo. More affectionately known as crotch-lizard and fart-monkey. Tiny black cat of 16 years just passed away, Bagheera.
American Lit quiz-
Almonzo is the name of what literary figure (was a real person.)
Grew up w/ black mutt, Blackie, That loved to sail on the keelboat, E and Hobie. If we left the dock without him and he saw us, he would try to swim after us. Would not turn back and we had to go back and pick him up several times.

Cody is our 3rd Golden, not 6 years old. His website is www.catsailor.com/Cody.html which is a little history of him. Great and loving dog that would have to go to heaven. The picture of his when he graduated early from school way ahead of his class and was able to go to advanced training.
Our first Golden was really a sailor. Just like yours in Texas he would hike to the windward side. I was trying to do the Wild Thing, but he was not in to that much.
Funny story: Nugget (the first one) and I had just won the TheMightyHobie18 Class Race and headed back in to shore ahead of a bunch of the other sailors. I was trapped and he was hiking. A puff followed by a big lull tripped me and I was spinning around at the end of the wire bouncing in and out of the water. Laughing like hell, I yelled, "Nugget, save me!" He danced around intently waiting for a chance to help during the spinning and when he got his chance he grabbed my cap. Anyone that knows me also knows I never go anywhere without my cap on. Guess he thought that was part of me he was saving.
