Well, not dress, but what gear should I need to sail during this time of year at GYC? I'll be down there next weekend, March 7th picking up the Viper. smile

I have a wetsuit, a shorty with a farmer john. I can't remember what the thickness is, but I'm I going to need to get a spray top or anything like that? I'm from Memphis, so I'm used to a little colder temps. I do need to get some booties however, I don't have any.

So, any suggestions?

Depends on the weather! laugh Boots, farmer john and spray top are the most I ever wear.

Our "120" rule (water and air temp must equal 120) precludes really nasty weather.

Long term forecast looks like sunny and mid 70's.

I am bringing a wetsuit, spray top. I need to buy boots, but think I will get them down there so I can try them on.

If you are going to be sailing uni and are new to single handing a spin boat, I would dress for swimming. For me, things get exciting when the wind gets over 10 kts. Two up is much more forgiving.

Thanks for the tips, yeah, I'll be uni. I'll make sure I dress a little warmer than the other folks. smile

A few more ideas. I don't know if they are good or not.
- Try to get boots that have a strap at the top that holds the zipper up. I have had 2 pairs that did not and they tend to unzip on their own.
- To be able to confidently right the boat in all conditions, you will probably need a righting bag. I use the big bag with the 4 to 1 blocks to lift it. Most of the time I don't need it but sometimes I do.
- Consider finding a crew for your first sail just to give you some time to sort out the new boat.
- If the winds are fairly strong (around 15 kts) really consider two up. Maybe if TEH is uni you guys could pair up. But if you do this watch out, they don't take too kindly to that sort of thing in those parts, just ask Timbo and that fool he paired up with at last years F16/Acat. =)

I hope some of this helps.

I'll be uni as well, so maybe we could team up. I will have some time on the boat the day before with Matt so hopefully that will help. Also, Robi indicated a willingness to crew.

The righting system for the uni F16 is simply an extra (make it two in case the first bursts) good industrial strength garbage bags. keep them folded in your tramp pouch. If you need them to right the boat, pull one out and open it, hike out on your righting line, dip the bag in the water gathering 2-3 gallons and pull onto your chest. It won't take much to bring the boat over.

Remember to keep a hold of your trash bag and stow it back ito your tramp bag!

Yeah I will be there, not sure if my boat will be up to speed. I still have to repair my main and get a new boom! blah dont ask. But I am more than willing to help out either with crewing or on the beach tips. I am no expert but I am always willing to help out with what I know.

Yeah, any pointers are very much appreciated. I am in Florida for three days: day 1 with Matt, days 2 and 3 at GYC.

What day you folks plan on showing up and what time do you estimate to be at GYC?

I do believe that I will trailer the boat directly from Fun and The Sun to GYC on Friday. From there, I do believe that Robbie is going to give me a little instruction and then it's all up to me after that. So, I'm guessing I'll arrive sometime Friday afternoon, sail a little and then try to sail some of the club races Saturday.

At least that's my plan.

Cape Canaveral on Friday to pick up the boat at Falcon Marine and get a rigging/sailing lesson. Arrive GYC some time Sat AM (11ish maybe). Sail in some club races Sat PM. Then sail again at GYC on Sunday.

TEH, Falcon Marine? Its not longer called Vectorworks Marine Inc?
Anyway I reccomend you try to show up earlier than 11am. Skippers meeting is at 12 racing usually starts at 1pm and goes through 3:30ish pm.

Falcon Marine bought the assets from VWM and have a new shop in Cape Canaveral. They will continue to support the Blade and are honoring my warranty.

I am trying to get to GYC earlier, but I have two buddies with me that I have to get out of bed. I am staying the night at my folks place in the Villages, so it will take me about 2 hours to get down there.

uggg.

The Villages isn't exactly on the way from CC to GYC. I guess it is your parents though.

Plan on 2 hours if you haven't rigged a spin boat before.
