I am in the process of installing a jib to my H17. I have noticed that on the older H17's, (I am not sure about newer ones) that the jib control is a fixed swivel cleat. Murrays sells a jib traveler track set up similar to the older H16's in their kit. Would the traveler be a big benifit on this boat or should I save the money and stick to the fixed swivel cleats.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Also, related to my above question, I was thinking about using the TheMightyHobie18 jib. Has anyone tried this, with good or bad results. Also, does it work with the stock jib control mounding points on the crossbar.

Any anput would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm not sure about other dimensions, but you can be sure that the 18 jib won't sheet to the crossbar. It overlaps pretty decently on the 18, with the jib block adjusting tracks along the tramp rails on hulls round where the daggerboards are. Unless the dimension between the bridles and front crossbeam is larger on the 17 than the 18, you'll need a different set up than the stock 17 sport.

sorry, no help from me . i sail jibless. i would like one sometimes to help tack and balance out the weather helm but i find the main has plenty of power. what is the reason you want to add the jib?

I tried to post this a few days ago, sorry I must've screwed up! I have a 17 I put the Murrays' Super Jib, and hardware on. I believe the "Super Jib" is an 18 jib. You have to mount the traveller tracks on the tramp rails, due to the sail overlap with the main. If you do this,USE STAAINLESS BOLTS WITH NYLOCK NUTS, and WASHERS, NOT RIVETS! I've done it both ways on seperate boats, and the bolts are easier, and are less likely to crack the fiberglass even if you back up the rivets with washers so they don't pull through. I find the jib is great downwind, and increases the capacity of the boat. In good wind I can take two adult passengers. I would like to get a mesh tramp for my current boat, as the "canvas" is in the water with almost any crew weight at all on it down wind, and you feel like your in a shallow jacusi. Had one great ride with a beatiful blonde last year, we were sailing downwind, and the jib got a gust just right. It felt like we had a chute up! What a blast! Feel free to contact me via e-mail with any questions. Good luck! Brian

I forgot to answer your question! The traveller tracks make a BIG difference in how you can adjust the jib! They are worthwhile!

Thanks for the great information, it is just what I am looking for! usually I sail with another adult, so I would at least want the standard jib. I just ordered a new sqaure top main from calvert.

I talked to Murrys friday and found out about the super jib. I did have a few questions. Did you mount the jib track along the tramp track drilling through the track and lip of the hull? do you think it weakens the boat? Also. is the super jib the only one you use? I was thinking of having tracks on the tramp and forward beam and just move the jib traveler for whichever jib I was using instead of having extra travelers on the boat.

Also, did you say it was giving good performance with two additional adults total of 3 adults? this sounds great for this boat.

Any other mods?

Thanks agian,

Mike

Mike, I did drill through the metal, and the glass lip. I don't think it has caused any structural problems. I also sealed the holes with West System epoxy as I went so water wouldn't seep into the glass. The two jibs, and seperate mountings sound OK, though since the "Super" is roller furling, I don't see the need for the smaller one. I don't recommend taking two adults, since the hulls aren't boyant enough to keep the tramp out of the water unless you are flying a hull, but I have done it several times, and as long as the wind was over 12 knots it was still fun. I still like to sail it solo, as the tramp dragging can really slow you down, but the added power of the jib makes taking a date along a really fun option. I have the Calvert Boomless Square Top on mine, and love it! I am going to add the Hawaiian Righting System so my crew will have a "sissy line" and make righting easier, and I am going in for the Wave Mast Float. I think the dangers of turtling, or having crew stuck under the sail during a capsize more than make up for any flack my friends give me.The one drawback to the Kit and sails was very limited instructions, and that Calvert and Murrays both forgot parts on mine. Calvert forgot the jib halyard cleat, and Murrays forgot the jib blocks. Also I had expected the Square Top to come with a window, and had to send it back at considerable expence. Be sure to order it with the window from the begining! They were both quick to rectify the minor problems, and I find them both great companies to do business with. The one thing I haven't figured out is mast rotation control without the boom. I got the Murrays kit for that too, but it doesn't provide any way to keep the mast from over-rotating.

When I unfurl the H16 jib on my 17, it makes a world of difference. I'd imagine an 18 jib would work even better. One thing you might want to be careful of though is the bow digging in with all that sail area fore.

This is a picture of my old H17 I had when I lived on Guam a few years abo. The sails are H16 sails, the main was re-cut and I had a zipper added to the jib. The H16 jib seems like a performance booster over the stock H17 jib, slightly larger. I had considered using the H16 jib on the one I am building now. I did not use the battens so I could furl it, so it fluttered a little along the edge. I used the stock jib cleat locations with this jib. I also installed a mast float (baby bob) ith modified mounting bracket. I can provide details if you were interested, Brian.

There is currently a problem with attaching photos (ever since we moved to a different server), and someone is working on the problem -- but probably not over the weekend.

Mike, I didn't get the picture but would like to see it. I had to put a mast float on my last boat, but can't remember what I did to attach the bracket. How did you do it? I remember drilling out the rivet that holds what I think is called the halyard sheeve, and replacing it with a threaded bolt. The bolt went through one of the hole on the float bracket. Would work better if there were no threads to wear out the plastic sheeve(?). I can't remember the rest though! So any pointers would be apreciated! Thanks, Brian
