ok, i know that this is a cat forum. but it is also a sailing forum.
i come to you with cap in hand for a good friend of mine. derek hatfield is a hell of a great guy. he is
also about the luckiest sonbitch i know. you see, derek is racing in the around alone on the open 40 spirit
of canada. he is sitting in third place over all in class II. his boat is un sponsored.
on friday as he was rounding cape horn. he pitch polled the boat. he was not tethered to the boat when
she went over. the rig exploded under water and the boat came back up, with him still aboard.
he motored into a small port in the south of argentina. here he and his shore crew are trying to get the
boat back together and get going again. derek's opinion is "race started in newport, race ends in newport.
i m going to newport."
