Here are the CatFight 1 results from Mission Bay YC in San Deigo:

4 Races Saturday, wind 10 kts; sailed outside the bay on the ocean. R/C stated they would use the wind speed corrected Portsmouth ratings...so for 10 kts, the I20 rates 60.2 and the Tornado rates 60.5 (slower than the I20). We did extremely well against the 5 I20's and one F18 in the fleet, scoring 3 wins and one 3rd place. As in the Midwinters, our chief rival was Bob Sherman & Denis Peret. There were many times we found ourselves behind them on the last leg and somehow managed to put on the afterburners to pass them before the line. The F18
was sailed by no other than Pete Melvin (World Champion A-cat sailor) and his son. We were not aware they were in our races until we got back to the club. The Area J Alter Cup qualifier races were also being held on the same course with 10 boats racing...mostly F18's. It was gratifying to beat Pete twice on the day.


Three races were scheduled for Sunday but winds were 30+ kts. Extremely gusty & shifty in the bay. We managed to capsize before first race during a gybe when the traveler jammed up and took quite a while to right it. She stayed on her side but we just couldn't get the wind under the cloth to lift the mast out. Had to drift it to the beach and drop sails first. Decided to head in...but were nearly 1 mile upwind from the club without sails up. We set off from the beach and were able to make 5-7 kts through the water with just the mast and the
rudders down. Had enough steerage to reach the club beach.

Richard Benner, (our fellow Afterburner teammate) started the first Sunday race on his I20 but we saw him capsized at the weather mark, then snagged on the mark. Bob Sherman capsized on a gybe and fell through the main sail completely shredding it...he limped it home. Only two boats managed to keep racing out of the seven. Pete Melvin & his son managed to overcome our lead in the points and took first overall. Afterwards I realized we should have just put the jib up and sailed at least one race…all we needed was to lose one of the 8 point DNC's off our score to win the event. Thankfully, only two races were sailed.

Why did you not compete in the Area Qualifier?

I don't get running two portsmouth races... each with less then 10 boats at the same regatta ...

I can sort of get running a one design race (Say F18's) and one portsmouth race with similar boats (N20's, A cats, F18's) but still think there should be one race.

I can understand running a seperate Hobie 16 od race and a portsmouth fleet of high performance boats... Still think there should be one race... but admit I don't want to see a Hobie 16 on the race course in breeze above 15 knots

Maybe I am just dense.... but I am curious.

There are several reason I chose not to do the Area J. First, most of the I20's were doing CatFight and we've had some good racing against them in the past. Would have liked to see how we'd measure up again the likes of Brandon on his I20 who sailed in Area J's...I'm sure it would have been humbling. No matter, we'll get another chance at Catfight II in two months time. Another reason was requirement to have all aboard be US Sailing members...that's ~$100. I'm not cheap and did not let this make the decision for me...basically, with the Olympic issue still bothering me, I just couldn't get past supporting US Sailing at this time.

I respect what others have done within US Sailing to correct this issue, more power to them.

Perhaps the rules should change and the boat's owner alone should be a USSA member. If the team wins and competes at the championship then both should be members by the time of the championship.

At the area level... I would rank developing a regional multiclass championship of USSA members greater then trying to drive up USSA membership by getting crews to join. Especially since only ONE boat will be slotted to move on.
The cat fight separate event is pretty good evidence that requiring both sailors to be members is a deterrent.

I notice that Regattas do not double the discount (or surcharge) for crew membership... so what is the advantage to a crew joining USSA)

Notably missing from the scratch sheet is the Hobie 16 and 20 So Cal class.... That looks like a yet another problem in getting a high quality regional multiclass championship.

You need buy in from ALL of the One design fleets to schedule a single mulitclass championship.
