Just got in from GYC. The only disappointment for the weekend was the open class. Two boats, 1 H16; 1 TheMightyHobie18 magnum.

In addition: 12 A Cats, 5 F18s, 17 F16s

We made a scheduling error and put ourselves in conflict with the Miami/ KeyLargo regatta and I'm sure that cost us some boats.

Results: (top 3; full results later)
Open:
1 H16 Arie Van Dujin and daughter Stephanie, age 10.
2 TheMightyHobie18 Bob Kaine/ Jim Lane

A Cat:
1 Ben Hall 7 pts.
2 Ben Moon 10
3 Woody Cope 11

F18:
1 Chris Prentice/Patrick LaRoche 8 pts. Capricorn
2 Ollie/Kelly Jason 10 Capricon
3 Wilder Robles/Jeff Marks 14 Capricorn

F16:
1 Matt/Gina McDonald 9 Pts. Falcon
2 Lynn OLson/Joanna Lienti 19 Blade
3 Andy Humphries/Michael McNair 19 Viper

Of the six races run, five different sailors posted bullets: Lynn OLson/Joanna Lienti race 1 Blade; Matt/Gina McDonald Falcon races 2 & 6; Andy Humphries/Michael McNair race 3 Viper; Seth Stern race 4 Taipan 4.9; Chris Amador race 5 Blade.

It was a great turn out, really good to meet all the ones who traveled so far to come, thank you all for showing up! And there were still 2 F16's at the club, not being sailed, that might have made it as charters.

Sorry I didn't get to go around and say goodbye to everyone, after the tractor pulled my trailer to the parking lot, they told me I had to hook it up and move it, as in,"Get the F -heck- out of the way!"

So I hooked it to the truck and went looking for a place to park the rig, but couldn't find any spot big enough, so I had to leave before I got a chance to say goodbye and thanks for coming.

And a special thanks to Robi for letting us stay at his house, and to Mike Borden who bought not one, but TWO bottles of Rum, for prizes, 1 for the first place Uni, which was won by Jody. And the other for the sailor who sailed all races but finished last. Consolation rum, not a bad idea!

I think we should continue this new tradion, so thanks for getting that started Mike! Hope you all have a safe drive home, I know it's a long, long way. We had a Capricorn F18 all the way from Canada too! Took first place!

Oh, and Saturday night we had an unofficial Class Meeting, where we voted Dave Ingram as our new Class President, and Brian Karr as the Vice President.

Now both of these guys sail F18's but neither one showed up for this regatta, only a 2 hour drive away, so that's the payback for not showing up.

Dave, I expect some type of an acceptance speach here soon. Welcome to the F16 class!

12 Uni's! Nice, but still the top 3 spots were all sloops, what does that say? Anything? To me it looked like the sloops did well in the first two races when the wind was up, but when it lightened up and on Sunday, the Uni's did better. Except for Matt and Gina, who did well no matter what the wind was! Great job Gina, we know the crew does all the real work!

Look at Seth's finishes overall. Good solid finishes in the heavy stuff. If he doesn't have the big hiccup on Sunday in the fifth race, he's right there in the hunt. And on the oldest platform in the fleet!

Taipan 4.9 still gettin' it done!

Seth prides himself on getting it done in the roughest of conditions (his like a Rhino).

Lets not forget Timbo that the last (and only) two F16 Global Challenge champs were uni sailors as well and both event where in LOTS of wind !

Seems like that claim made for equality between 1-ups and 2-ups is still valid. Both win regatta's, and if a particular setup doesn't then the sailing skills of the associated crew just wasn't better then those if the winning crew.

Even in the F16 class you can't buy a figure you way into a win unless by improving your sailing skills !

Very nice event, ya'all !

How did the F18's do in the fleet compared to F16's ?

Matt could probably give a better answer. I saw no problem at all with the starts.

It appears to me the best sailors won. The difference in skill level is much greater than the D-PN.

Overall, it was a good format; start the A Class first (no body wants to fight with them off the line). Then a combined spinnaker fleet.

Well Wouter, that might be true, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that Matt and Gina will pretty much own the next one.

And that first GC, pretty extreme conditions wasn't it? And the winning Uni didn't fly his spinnaker because it was too windy, right? While Matt was trying to do it but ended up swimming with his new to him crew, right? You don't think that might have been an issue there?

In the just complete GYC regatta, look at the results. Race 1 was the only race with any real wind, and the Sloops finished 1,2,3. But the next 3 boats were all Uni's.

But as the winds got lighter and shiftier, it was anybody's race. Being on the good side of a shift, and staying out of the holes was pure luck sometimes. Still, Matt and G were very good in both the wind and no-wind races, as was Jody, who was the top Uni.

I really tried to be there but I used all the favors with my co-workers to support my extended weekend for Spring Fever.

I did enjoy the drunken fire side chat with you all and it was almost like being there. You guys cracked me up and it was a nice break from the cluster F!@# I was involved in at work.

Just got in a couple of hours ago and just now got to sit down.

What a fun event. I sucked, but I know I'm going to get it!!!!

I hope the Rum is good. Please let me know if it is or isn't so I know to not buy that again.

I'm glad I came to the even and met everyone. All of you are great to be around which makes it a lot of fun, even for us who don't do well.

I hope to see you guys in the fall at the Global Challenge.

Again, Thanks!!!

Mike, glad you made it home safely, that is a long drive to do alone after a tough weekend staying up late. sick

But next time, I think we should all pitch in we should be able to buy a couple bottles of rum, for the top Uni and the bottom finisher who finishes -all- races. Maybe buy 3 bottles, one for the top sloop too, or 4, since the crew on the sloop is going to need one all for herself (or himself)!

Great idea, and thanks again for putting up the two bottles, you are off the hook for another 16 events or so!

Hi all,

that's what we just did in OZ. But it was wine for all. Thanks to Chirping Bird Winery owned by new member who donated a dozen bottles and we had 11 entries. Just seemed a forgone conclusion, 2 for first 1 for everybody else. wink
