Hey Matt from Mt Isa - are you around and ready to sail? Do you need help?

Looks like wind 20 - 25 Knots from SE.

Cleveland has a race to Coochie and back which will have some fast reaching legs in course. Could be heavy out on water there although tide is running out and so wind is in same direction = little wind against current waves.

If wind over 22 Knots racing will be off.

I am considering a run up to Lake Cootharaba to sail on Sunday for a 1330 start.
Do you know if they call it off in strong wind?

Any thoughts/comments on where and when?

If you are going up to Lake Cootharaba it may be advantageous for all the Qld boats to get to know Vic Collett. Vic was a very good mossie sailor and has a wealth of knowledge that he mau be happy to pass on to you all, if appraoched and asked.

It will be one way for you guys to gain quickly a lot of info, so please ask if he is around.

As i said in another post, Vic Collett actually races at Humpybong with his son Brad, they now both race a-class.

BOM is predicting 20-25, but sea breeze is showing less at around 15-18, so its hard to tell what its going to be like.

I am definately planning on racing however. If its above 20 knots Humpybong wont race, so if it is looking like itll get 20-25, then maybe a day up a Lake Cootharaba is the way to go. Could be a good chance to get some practice racing in there before the easter regatta.

If it is looking to be more like 15 knots, then i might suggest humpybong, they have a lot of cats there and good sailors, the Colletts included, which we can always have a chat to about mossies.

But one way or another i will be out on the water this weekend, i guess its just a matter of where, all depending on weather. Pity samsonvale isnt racing this weekend its great out there in 20-25.
May have to give someone from Cootharaba a call and ask them in what kind of wind they typically cancel, as i couldnt find anything on their webpage or notices of races about cancellation due to strong wind.

Hi Michael,

Have called LCSC, spoke to Vice Commodore and they generally get less breeze than say Moreton Bay or open water plus having flat water which means they sail up to around 25 Knots.

It suggests they will be sailing so maybe look at Cootharaba for a sail.

BOM still has 20 - 25 from SE for Sunday.

Its always a bit hard to guess what will actually come in.

Could make a decision at 8.00 on Sunday morning if you like as that leaves enough time to go any of them.

Ok sounds like the best thing to do is make a judgment call tomorrow. Ill probably get up quite early and see what the weather on the bay is doing.

Seabreeze is forecasting 20+ knots again on sunday. Samsonvale is racing, but its a marathon race up and down the lake and down some of the river areas of the lake not usually sailed on for general racing, sounds like it could be fun. I think all coastal waters are going to be blown out again.

Attached is the NOR for next Sunday's race – the first marathon we have been able to hold for about 3 years.

The marathon is quite different from our normal competitions;

* There is only one race on the day.
* Instead of being a combination of triangles & sausages around A, B, C & possibly H marks the marathon is much more free-form & takes us up the lower reaches of the North Pine River i.e. Past “B” mark & “round the bend” into the river & then takes us as far to the Western end of the lake as water depth will allow.
* Because of the above we get to see much more of the lake & its surrounds than many of our members will have seen previously.
* Because of the free-form nature of the course the sailing can be very varied & hence really interesting.


This is a fantastic opportunity to visit those places you can’t normally reach. So come along & have a great day.

Had seen the Samsonvale marathon notice, sounds good, seabreeze forecast has changed a few times over last few days.

Like other week will have a look at conditions Fri / Sat and then decide.

Samsonvale does seem like a good option and with the marathon style race, wish we had done that last Sunday.

Yeah i know, if the coast too blowy, i suspect we will see quite a few sailors from humpybong out at samsonvale as well, could make for a very decent sized fleet of boats.

Cleveland or Humpybong would be OK.

I did like the idea of the marathon at Samsonvale though.
Will there be enough wind to get up and going?

Have made a trap harness for the kids out of my old sailboard harness and would like to get one of them out on the wire as well. Could be great or end in a mess but worth it anyway.
Hamish is only 20kg so he will not make much difference.

So what are your thoughts - Michael?

I think the best bet will be samsonvale, it was suppose to be 15-20 last week on the bay as well and we know how that turned out. Id say theres a 50/50 chance of humpybong racing at humpybong, so we may or may not see them out at samsonvale, i just dont know. Not that samsonvale will be boring without them as they have a sizable enough fleet on their own, with very good sailors who are always friendly and willing to offer advice when its needed (a fair bit in my case ). 15-20 will easily be enough to have a blast at samsonvale, they usually get 3-5 knots less than the coast, depending on the wind direction, but its flat, so no worry about waves (which is typically the main reason why humpybong gets cancelled).

I just looked at BOM forecast for Moreton bay and they are saying 20-25 for the bay! With 1.2m seas, so we can pretty much write humpybong off.

Also, my uncle is visiting from overseas at them moment and we are dropping him off at the airport at around 8am on sunday, so i may be 20-30minutes late out to samsonvale, but i spoke to David Bosley the yesterday (one of their racing officers) and he said if we arrive at the samsonvale gate at around 8:30 - 9:00 we should be able to get through the gate with the other members (the sailing club is actually on national park, so no public access, the sailing club has permission though, but it makes for a very quiet and relaxing place to sail). But as i said i may be a bit late, but if no ones coming through ill just give some one a call to come out and open the gate, which they are always happy to do.

Samsonvale it is.

Had a look at BOM and 20-30 on the bay could be hard going.

Down the track with a bit more time on the boat will be OK with stronger winds but need to get to know it better first.

Will aim to be at gates at 8.30am.

Not sure if I am a starter for this Sunday. Have a few other comittments this weekend that need to be done and prepare for Easter trip.

Shame as it looks like 10 - 15 knots so would be good sailing.

Was planning to sail at Cleveland this Sunday. Michael - any plans?

Have some unfinished business from last week, need to finish the race......!!!

Was out in front under kite , out on trap in maybe 10 knots on a broad reach and the main shackle on mast for stays, trap etc blew and dropped the mast.

Came to abrupt halt right at bottom mark and had to wave everyone through, could have cried.

Forecast is for 15 knots plus so should be a hoot this Sunday.

Ill try and make it down to cleveland, just depends on whether ill have the car available, if i do, ill be there.

That would be great if you could, the others in the club were even asking after you.

I noticed no one else is racing this sunday either.

Are you going to sail peel island marathon next Sunday?, would be great to have both mossies there with kites.

There is an after race bbq on as well on sunday so makes for a good social day.
