Voting is now open for US SAILING's Sailor Athlete Council. If you are a US SAILING member please vote. Five new members will be selected from the list of 20 nominated. Three Multihull Sailors were nominated, John Williams, Matt Bounds, and William Jeffers. Now is your chance to help increase your voice in this important Council. To vote, go to www.USSAILING.org/sac/referendum

Also, if you have not registered as a Sailor Athlete, now would be a good time, there is no charge.

I looked at registering as a Sailor Athlete, but my class did not renew its US Sailing membership so I'm not elegible. frown

I don't think it matters whether your class is a member. You still have to be a member as an individual in order to vote. And if your class is a member, I think the class gets a vote, too.

At least I think that is how it works.

John Williams knows.

How do you sign up as a Sailor Athlete? I see no free memberships of any type

I'm not talking about voting, I'm talking about registering as a Sailor Athlete.

I have an individual (family actually) membership to US Sailing (required to be a Judge). However, in order to be a Sailor Athlete, you either have to compete in the Olympics (or similar international events), a US Sailing/ISAF sanctioned event, or the Nationals/North Americans of a US Sailing member class. Requirement 3.3.2.3 states:
Quote
B LEVEL Sailor Athletes shall have: ... Placed in the top one third of... the National or North American Sailing Championship of a US SAILING member class within the last ten years...

I'd qualify except that my class did not renew its US Sailing membership. While I'd like to claim Sailor Athlete status, I'm not inclined to pay $100 (the cost of class membership) for the privilege.

Regards,
Eric

Andrew, you have to be member of US SAILING. Then, there is no charge to register as a Sailor Athlete.

Eric, looks like you are correct. The boat class must be listed as current by US SAILING.

To assist me in completing my sinister plan of the multihulls taking over US SAILING, I strongly encourage the Isotopes to renew their class membership to US SAILING. That would give them a vote in the One-Design Class Council - which is nearly controlled by catamarans now.

Then, you could also vote me, John and Billy in to the Sailor Athlete Council - and another council falls under multihull dominion!

MUAHAHAHAHA! cool

Let's hold the "giddy - up" here. I regret I missed the memo on this, but I am interested in the trail of events which led to this "vote." I have seen no recent notices of this action on the US Sailing web site. Is this a "backdoor" thing or what?
I have been busy racing trimarans, and there are those of us that should have an ear and a say in this action.

I would be most grateful for some explanation I can pass along to my friends.

Aloha - B

As noted in our PM's, no hidden agenda. All US SAILING Sailor Athlete's received the request to nominate, followed by the ballot to vote. To register as a Sailor Athlete go to http://www.ussailing.org/sac/

Bump and shameless plug . . .

Dear Sailor Athlete,

There is one day left to vote in the 2009 SAC Election. The Council is very pleased to present a strong and diverse slate of nominees for election to the Council including Liz Baylis, Bob Billingham, Matt Bounds, Andrew Campbell, Molly Carapiet, Andrew Cole, Kimberly Couranz, Carol Cronin, Rick Doerr, Albert Foster, Amy Gross-Kehoe, Sandy Grosvenor, Liz Hall, William Jeffers, Suzy Leech, Margaret Podlich, Dawn Riley, Austin Sperry, Hank Stuart and John Williams.

“Sailor Athletes voting for this group of candidates will get to select from a list of names active across a broad range of different aspects of our sport,” said Council Chairman Ned Jones. “One of our goals was increase the diversity of SAC by adding Council members with offshore and non-Olympic one-design experience as well as coaching and judging experience. This crop of candidates addresses those goals nicely.”

One hundred thirty (130) sailor athletes have already cast votes for the five open slots on the Council. If you are one of the 350+ that has not voted yet, please do so TODAY by going to www.USSAILING.org/sac/referendum.

Thank you.

Regards,
Ned Jones, Chair

Elections for US SAILING’s Sailor Athlete Council have recently concluded and six sailors have been elected to the Council. The new Council members are Andrew Campbell, Liz Hall, Dawn Riley, Carol Cronin, Amy Gross-Kehoe and Liz Baylis.

On behalf of US SAILING and the Sailor Athlete Council, I would thank you for being a nominee to the Council. Although you were not elected, we hope that you will continue to contribute as a registered sailor athlete.

Again, thank you on behalf of the Council and the US SAILING Board of Directors for running for the Sailor Athlete Council.

Regards,

Lee Parks
Inshore Director
US SAILING

As I thought, the "election" was pretty much a popularity / name recognition contest.

Well, I wanted to say this months ago and now I don’t feel bad about saying it. As a founding member of the SAAC I can tell you that it is a completely toothless organization with the power to change absolutely nothing. Your time and energy are better spent elsewhere.
