I have an '86 Hobie 16 without a comp tip, jsut the original aluminum mast. Is there a good reason to retrofit a comp tip onto the current mast? (I found one used but its not cheap)

The original purpose for CompTips is still valid...

They protect against electrocution due to contact with overhead power lines.
