IMHO:
42 really means that in the time it takes to come up with an ideal solution, a decent solution could have been implemented and much pain and suffering avoided.

Just going sailing would seem to be a decent solution in this context ;-)

Personally, I use the Infinite Improbability Drive quite often. I'll take a wrong turn without realizing it, but somehow manage to end up in the right place; so it MUST be the IIP in my car. My wife gets a kick out of it when I say "Oh! So this is where we are!"

I don't believe the mice actually knew the question, (pertaining to Life the Universe and Everything) since they were unable to disect Arther Dent's brain. They came up with something along the lines of "How many roads must a man walk?" and ran with that.
