Posts: 921 Alachua, FL | I'm thinking about getting a Whirlwind Flex crosscut squarehead sail for my Hobie 20. Can anybody give me a review of Whirlwind or of the sail? Also I read someplace that a square head on a comptip doesn't work well, should I just go for a standard H20 or replica instead?
Thanks, John I have both a main and jib from Chip and they are great. I asked about a squaretop and he recommended the standard pinhead. They did testing and found that to be just as fast. I have just ordered a new spinny from Whirlwind as well. You know that they make the H20 class sails for HCC. They will make yours from the same patterns if you want, and in any colors you choose.

I was reprimanded once in the MKL for using a square top, even though I was the 5th boat (5 boats needed) and a B fleet sailor to make the class. Rather embarassing.

Unregistered | Chip Buck from Whirlwind is fantastic. I have bought at least 5 sails from him and I love them all. | | | Re: What H20 main to buy?

I would hope after all the banter here over the last week or two that folks might be a little more tolerant of some of the "class" stuff that doesn't really make a big difference. The MKL is hardly a NA or World Championship. So did they let you in or did they go with a 4 boat "almost" class?

Posts: 1,304 Gulf Coast relocated from Cali... | IMHO, Chip buck is the only one I'd go to for a H20 main. We've done some testing with other sails he's made and I believe his work is second to none. Pintop or square on the Miracle 20, I think, makes no difference since you can depower the top so easily with the comptip (the only good thing I can say about the comptip). Class legal? Seriously, how many Hobie class races are you going to do anyway? Besides, he's the one who used to make them anyway.
