Does 37 feet sound about right?

I measured mine, but didn't write it down, and I can't remember if it was 27, or 37 feet.

I guess about 10m (33ft) is enough. If you trap from the wings, you need a bit more (37?).

Cheers,

Klaus

I measured one of mine at 23ft for an 8:1 (tied to a separate traveller line) Perfect for bouy racing - no spare line to get caught on anything. I used a 30ft line for the Tybee - again tied to a separate traveller line - too long (the scissors came out on the GT300).
30 ft overall length is probably about right on an 8.5ft boat with no wings (obviously this varies a bit depending on stack height - but you aim to be pretty close to block:block at max sheet tension).

Mine is 27 feet. 7 feet of taper and 20 feet of line. The line is a little long, but not too much too long (lets me drive singlehanded from the front beam.

Also - separate traveler line.

I think I'll order 25' and run a seperate traveler line. I need to make mine a split tail anyway so it'll actually center.

Do most people taper 3/8" line for the main sheet? I just learned how to do this, and I'm quite surprised how un-involved it really is. I thought it bordered on witch-craft before.

I'm boatless.

That sound about right. Mine is 8 mm Racing Sheet (I think) into 5 mm Amsteel.

I've had both tapered/stripped sheets and spliced. I like the spliced better.

Best sheet line out there is the new Salsa and at a great price. Soft, easy on the hands, never knots and runs through blocks very easily. Love the stuff,

Salsa doesn't have a core right?
I don't know how to splice two lines together yet. Probably just dyneema in a foot or so of the salsa, then in and out through the Salsa a couple of times close together, then back out through the salsa to splice the two lines together?

$1.59 a foot is way more inviting than the stuff in the APS catalog I was looking at for $3.35/ft

Better to order a couple of feet extra and cut off the excess. Rather than order a couple of feet short, unless you are looking for two 12 foot low stretch clothes lines

Oh, forgot to mention, it is so comfortable on the hands you can go a size smaller in sheets. Waves come with 3/8" and most folks switched to 5/16" but with Salsa most have gone to 1/4" sheet.

If you can not find "Salsa" line by New England ... you may wish to try "Conception" by Yale. Both are Dynama75 but Salsa also has spun filament polyester ... the Conception has polypropelene. Both are approximently the same pricing but the Conception is availible in 3/16", the Salsa only down to 1/4". Both run large and are very soft and easy on the hands.

I recently upgraded my nieces lines on her Laser ... Yale Conception (1/4") for the mainsheet and Maffioli Swiftcord (3/16") for her Vang, Downhaul, and OutHaul (she needed 3 different colors for the control lines). Her fellow Jr Sailors are amazed at the fact that her mainsheet does not drag in the water when running downwind and the vang, downhaul and outhaul will run freely and are adjustable .... so they're asking their parents to replace their lines w/ the same lines as on Megan's Laser. A couple of visiting coachs heard about the lines on Megans boat and asked questions also, especially the coach that towed the Jrs in and actually felt and handled the mainsheet as a tow line.

I've had the Conception on my TheMightyHobie18 since 07'as my jibsheet and mainsheet. I am very pleased w/ it and usually sail w/o gloves ... now I need to up-grade the lines on my P19MX.

But a reminder ... these types of line are UV sensitive so I do not leave them exposed in the sunlight if the TheMightyHobie18 is not being sailed daily, I remove the mainsheet stack and jibsheet and store them in my sailbox.

I love these blended dynema 75 lines... they are soft, dont get full of water, and run fast... but the one thing i don't like is they seem to stick to tne velcro on my gloves (if i am wearing them).

Hasn't caused any major issues but its annoying to have the jib sheet stuck to my hand when trying to sheet the main.

Andrew,

I could see where lines sticking to Velcro could be used to your advantage. How about if you put a short strip of the hook part of Velcro on the deck near your side stay. When you're out on trap solo you could set your jib line onto the Velcro and it would never slide away.

Same with the traveler...stick it to the deck by the rear beam...no drift. It would easily rip loose when you need it.

How about a big stripe of Velcro in mid-tramp to keep your main sheet from sliding off the boat. I must snap my main back across the tramp a hundred times a day. This could be an easy fix.

Rick, do you know if Salsa sticks to Velcro?

I can think of a much better place to put a piece of tape.... MR PARKER~! (esp after your "translation" services!)

It really is more an annoyance than anything... but i can see... in an emergency situation when i MUST travel out... or sheet out... and to have extra lines hanging off my gloves... can't help!

but besides that... possibly a small piece of tape on the OUTSIDE of the plastic side stay adjuster plate cover for the jib... i wouldn't want Velcro on my tramp... slide against that when tacking..... owiiie... as it is i am covered in scrapes/scabs/blood/bruises/black and blue... and thats just from rigging!!!! smile

I checked it out last night and Salsa does stick to velcro. It sticks, but unless you stepped on it??? it's a very small area of the line that can come in contact with the velcro. I tried it on a glove, but I think I have a roll of 2" somewhere. You would probably need a 2 or 3 inch wide piece or a significant length of narrower velcro to be effective. Maybe a 6 by 6 inch patch would work, something big enough you can pile the sheet on to. Or how about a thin strip all the way across the rear, and/or center of the tramp? That's where the sheets are going to slide, to the rear or center.

good idea David
