Posts: 976 France | the prescribed International F18 course is 2 laps. Not exactly. Could be 3: - windward/leeward courses - offset mark (minimum 70° to the wind direction) to be rounded after the windward mark - gate at the leeward mark - 2 or 3 rounds, target time for the first boat to finish : 60 minutes. Longer or shorter actual duration for a race will not be ground for redress. Source: http://www.f18-international.org/rwcrules.htm | | | Re: F18 Worlds Started Yesterday

Four races in 3 hours!, assuming they do 3 laps each race they must be going very fast!
Damage after 3 hours or racing: -broken and folded(!) masts -rudders -smashed bows -broken halyards -heavy bruises -ripped mainsails -bent spreaders(!) -tramp problems -broken battens -ripped gennakers -holes in hulls -broken trapeze harnesses -snappes joysticks -torn jibs -loads of capsizes -mainsail torn out of track(!) Tony, I assume you are watching from the beach? There is a good live comentary on the news section of the website

Also, interesting math. 4 races in 3 hours when the target time is 60 minutes. We must be missing some critical info.
Black flag starts are no fun for the RC, either.
Mike Aren't they running multiple courses? The races are about 37 minutes for the first boat and 57 for the last. A 'target' is more a guideline than a rule in my opinion. 37 minutes per race isn't a bad length of time.

I agree that it's a guideline. But, if you tell sailors a target time, they will expect you to be very close to that, especially at this level. They will expect you to set and adjust the course as needed to meet it. If you don't, you're setting yourself up for a disgruntled fleet, at a minimum. Time-consuming redress hearings, worst-case.
Anything less than 50 minutes for a catamaran regatta of this magnitude is certainly not sufficient. That would be the opinion of all of the top ROs that I know, and the top sailors as well.
BTW, target time is for the first boat to finish.
The statements above are generalizations, but, I repeat, I am not going to criticize this particular event at this distance without more info.

Mike I don't recognize him Mike. This is from 3:45 into the "Day 2 - No Wind" video: ![[Linked Image]](http://www.catsailor.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10063/normal_F-18%20Worlds%20PRO.jpg) He is obviously the guy on the phone, wearing the PRO standard "necklace" (hand bearing compass). | | | Re: F18 Worlds Started Yesterday

Mike, my earlier statement about 4 races in 4 hours was wrong. There where "only" 2 races per boat (which is 4 starts). 50 mins for a race is IMHO more than enough. They probably did 3 laps today, IMHO there is no point in doing more since the leaders will just create a bigger lead and have more time to recover for the next race. What I like about doing just 2 laps is that when the favorites make a mistake you actually have a chance to beat them instead of them being able to correct their mistakes during the last lap. | | | Re: F18 Worlds Started Yesterday

Posts: 3,906 Clermont, FL, USA | Anybody know the story behind Robbie's dnf ? I just heard from Jill. "Robbie capsized while jibing without a spin along with 4 other boats. The mast got stuck in the mud and the current held the boat upwind of the mast." She also confirmed it was blowing 25 today.

Posts: 3,969 | Thanks for the clarification Tony.
All races are supposed to hit the target time. When you want two laps, you have a longer beat (and run). When you want three laps, you move the weather mark closer to the gate.
Either way, even if you run five laps, you need to hit the target. (Of course, no one would do that, because the laps would be so short that the carnage at the marks would be incredible, since the boats won't have time to separate.)
Personally, I prefer three laps as a sailor, because it keeps the fleet closer together and allows for more tactical work at the marks. Other sailors prefer two lap races because they tend to be more strategic. Good RCs run a mix.
