I have heard the comptip is lighter, but unreliable souce. My aunt lives in Beaufort SC, says its really nice.

I was using the aluminum on my old boat and the "new" one has a comp tip. The comp tip is lighter by feel by a fair amount. Seemed much easier to step.

Is the comp tip (ONLY THE TIP / WHEEL AT TOP?)
I bought 2 used boats - one is all alum. One has I think comp tip (top part seems like plastic) I think the comp is for saftey? BUT REALLY is it that much safer? If it's only the top 6"? If raising near power lines we'd touch the lines with mast not the tip. So far I prefer the aluminum... sail goes up easier. In stepping, not sure why, the black anodized with comp tip was much harder. If there's a weight dif - would be minuscule since the part is so small? But I'm a total newbie -

The composite tip is several feet at the top of the mast. (maybe about 1/3 of the mast) You can tell a comp tip from an aluminum mast simply by the way it looks at the top. The aluminum mast has a round mast head. The comp tip is flat on top. It is in fact that much safer, simply based on conductivity of materials. Of course the safest thing to do is be careful where you raise your mast and move your boat.

I wonder if the prev owner had just installed the top cap/pulley housing then on a standard aluminum mast.
