This morning Eunice Kennedy Shriver has passed away. While it doesn't seem that there is any connection between us "beach catters" and Miss Eunice there is in fact a very deep connection. For myself while I have been fortunate to have many outstanding sailing experiences on all kinds of boats, in all types of racing, the most rewarding experiences I have had was as a sailing coach for the SPECIAL OLYMPICS. The current Special Olympics Sailing Program can be traced directly back to "beach cat" sailors who imbraced the idea of sailing w/ special needs individuals. So while many others in the sailing community only saw obstacles, the organizers of the Special Olympics only saw opportunity in a motley group of "beach catters". It was because of Miss Eunice's leadership that I was able to have these experiences and enrich my life beyond measure along w/ many of my fellow "beach catters".

Miss Eunice, may you always have calm seas and favorable breezes .....
