Luckily there was no damages apart from the spin pole end-cap (probably still stuck in the sand somewhere.

So what is the story behind it?

We were sailing today the T as well, after a long maintenance stop (see picture). We were more in than ones submergerd til the front beam, but the boat did not tend to flip over like that.

I’ve seen a lot of chat about bow design - Sand-piercing bows?

Was in a bit of a rush when posting so didn't write the whole story.

We where going to do an annual long-distance race about 30nm long last Saturday from Medemblik (not Catpoint).
Then early in the morning I get a call that it has been canceled.

The night before, the race organizers where setting up the event's tent (one of those army tents)
and the race-officer get very badly injured. From what I heard a tent pole hit his eye and there
might be a possibility of losing it, very sad story.
After the accident they decided to cancel the event, which was very understandable.

Now there was also the small issue of 25kt winds gusting to 30, a few F18s decided to rig up and sail but chickened out eventually.
The only ones still wanting to sail where the Tornado team (I would too if it took 2 hours to put the damn thing together!).
So they walked to the back of the little lagoon, hopped on , just when a huge gust hits them (you can see it in the pic), it drives the bows under and their spinpole hits the sandy bottom really hard (its only waist deep).
Luckily I was standing on the breakwater armed with my phone to take a nice pic of them sailing out when it happened.
Spent the rest of the day kitesurfing, so all was not wasted.

I do not want to hurt anyone fillings but picture looks like good Photoshop work. Where is the crew and why main sail and jib are on the opposite sides? Also water does not show 25k of wind.

Could be deluding myself, but looks like one guy is at the foot of the jib, and the other is mostly over the side, but enlarged you can see the drysuits...and looks windy farther out, like they ducked into the lee of where the photographer is standing...if he's really standing near a lake somewhere, that is...

No photoshop!, the skipper is behind the jib and the crew is at the bow somewhere.
They where sailing almost dead-downwind in this little pool, sailing from W to E when a big gust hit.

Crew is in the water, skipper behind jib. Go see an optometrist.

Tony,

that is a true Kodak moment. A pro could do it no better. Get yourself a camera with a phone the next time you are shopping.

This is unusual to pitch pole in such flat water...but it can happen if the boat is moving very slowly near DDW, main traveller out far, crew weight not right aft and then a big gust hits.

If the boat was going faster, the wind's impact would have been lessened and they would have made it.

PS: the image might look photoshopped if your browse doesn't show it full size...right click and view it in a separate window, resize to max...you can clearly see the carnoage on t he deck!

Old saying you are always racing, even if you are not.

Few years back I came in the Palm Beach Inlet one day after a great solo sail in a stout East wind as I came around the corner of the inlet, which is somewhat, protected from the wind and let my guard down for a minute. A yacht was just getting into it past the no wake zone and was throwing a 4-foot curl. The curl hit me and the wind flipped 180 degrees at the same time. I was not was not paying attention to the accumulative events and I was flipped in the drink right by the private docks. The Cost Guard happened to be coming by in a cutter shortly afterwards and tried to save me. I was swimming to keep my boat off of the dock and rocks - incoming tide. I wanted the boat saved and had them cast off when they started to throw the grappling hook at me. They were going to snag my boat pull it close enough to save me, then turn my boat loose. You can order the coast guard to not save you, and in most cases that would be stupid, but they only save people not boats and I was OK.

A friend in the Costies came by in a rubber skiff and dragged me across the inlet to the Peanut Island sandbar on my side so I could sort things out. At the time Peanut Island was a Coast Guard Base developed in 1938 and made famous as the fallout shelter for President John Kennedy during the Cuban missile crisis and now it is a park. The yacht that swamped me kept on going. I hoped they were heavily invested with Bernie Maydoff.

If they save your life, you need their help and are lucky they were there.

"The yacht that swamped me..." Haven't we all been there? I recall a time in Newport, sailing with one of the girls from the radio station, when we got cut off by a "yacht" (a 50+ foot power boat), who intentionally cut across my bow, putting my entire boat airborne (I actually didn't think that was possible on a H16 before this happened). When we recovered, I could see that he was watching us, and TAPING IT ON VIDEO!!! He was going too fast for me to get the name of his boat, not that I probably would have done much about it.

Mike
