tudor insurance ph 03 9707 3033 is what most of the timber mossie and paper tiger sailors are using.
payment of around $340 a year.

Hi Mick M,

I have found CGU to be reasonable.

CGU was good until I wanted to insure a home built timber boat, then they didn't want to know me.
Tudor insurance wasn't a problem.

Contacting insurers has been an interesting exercise to seek out cost effective coverage.
Some insurers won't touch any cat over 20 years old.
one major firm won't insure any boat over 3 metres.(meaning I missed out by 1.4metres)

Others demanded:
A boat ID number, (the cat when built wasn't given any - the only ID is the sail no)
Proof of ownership, (a purchase receipt- I have it somewhere but haven't found it yet),
a colour photo
and lastly and most importantly:
a seaworthiness/structural report from a marine surveyer.

Quotes were from $180 to $500Au with up to $500 excess and 'dagnabit' the cheapest was the one with the most stringent conditions.

A marine surveyer was $400+.

Despite all the dramas covered at last!

Thanks for all the advice so far - it has been interesting.

Last year I looked into this and found many of the popular insurers won't look at a boat that is amateur built which makes it hard.

Tudor and GIO will provide comprehensive (including racing) for $395 on a $15K ameteur built boat.

GIO will provide TPO (no racing) for $95

An interesting proposition to consider is that Tudor will provide coverage for trailer and hulls only (est value $6K????) for $230. This means the mast, sails, deck etc will not be covered. I put this to Tudor recently on the basis that the risk was in the trailer (if a road accident) and to the hulls in the event of a collision at sea (or road). This might be a lower cost way of getting racing and comprehensive coverage on the major risk components of the mossi.

Anyway ..... still considering options

Ended up with Suncorp $330/yr with a $250 excess.
No questions on age or condition of boat and they were very easy to deal with. i was trying to beat them down to $200 but in the end just wanted coverage without the hassles.
