This doesn't look promising for survival. Anyone know who this is?

If so please call the Coasties

Coast Guard finds capsized boat, not operator
Posted: Today at 10:20 a.m.

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard was searching Thursday for the operator of a capsized catamaran that was found 23 miles southeast of the Cape Fear River Wednesday morning.
The crew of the charter boat Pomolas called Station Oak Island watchstanders at 8:54 a.m. Wednesday, saying they had found a capsized 18-foot white Hobie Cat catamaran with a multicolored sail. They did not see any debris, markings, or marine growth, authorities said.
An MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crew and an HC-130J Hercules airplane crew from Air Station Elizabeth City; the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Beluga, an 87-foot patrol boat; and a 41-foot rescue boat crew from Station Oak Island searched the area for signs of the catamaran's operator.
When the boat crew from the station arrived on scene and righted the capsized vessel, they discovered a cooler and a half-eaten sandwich inside, authorities said. Identifying markings on the catamaran include a large number 16 on one of the pontoons and the number 65474 on the multicolored sail, they said.
Watchstanders are contacting marinas and boat rental agencies in North and South Carolina to determine the identity of the vessel and its operator, authorities said.
Anyone with information about the catamaran or its operator is asked to call the Coast Guard 5th District command center at 757-398-6390.

I don't think so. I can't remember that the Hobie 18 numbers ever got into five digits. Probably a 16. Maybe that's why it says "16" on the side, unless it was put on there as an identifying number for a rental operation or for a major regatta with boat rotation, or something like that.

I put a call in to Thomas Stone, he is one of the Wrightsville 18 crew. Haven't heard back from him but if it was a local sailor he will know who it is. The number 16 on the hull doesn't ring any bells for me.

The wind was pretty strong at the coast this weekend and storms on Sun and Mon. Hope the boat just got away and the skipper is ok!

Yeah, I hope all he lost was a half a sandwich.

If he was missing, you would think somebody would have reported it by now.

Ok, I just got a hold of Thomas. Obviously it wasn't his boat. He doesn't know the owner either. That far SE of the river they could have launced from a lot of places. I wish there was more I could do. I hope the skipper/crew is ok.

I hope somebody analyzed that sandwich to find out how old it was at the time the boat was recovered. Or have I been reading too many Patricia Cornwell novels?

I guess they could analyze DNA from the sandwich to help identify the person on the boat.

It would be much simpler to get the vessel registration number, or the hull number, and look up the owner in the NC Wildlife Resource Commission records.

Definitely a 16 with that sail number.

18s are into 5 digits, but not above 20XXX.

The 16 on the hull could be from a Nationals boat, although the sail number doesn't match with that. They only did that for a few years in the late '80s, when the sail numbers were higher.

Doesn't need to be registered in NC.

Can you justify that assertion? I don't think it's true.

Accordng to http://www.ncwildlife.org/License/Vessel_Basic_Facts.htm#q3:

What Vessels Must be Registered?
All sailboats used on public waters must be registered if longer than 14 feet at the load waterline.

You can argue that a Hobie 16 is shorter than 14 feet at the waterline, but that won't keep you from being ticketed.

And from http://www.ncwildlife.org/License/Vessel_Basic_Facts.htm#q6:
Quote
What Vessels Must be Titled?
Anyone who purchases or transfers a ... sailboat 14 feet or longer ... will be required to title the vessel effective Jan.1, 2007

If the owner bought the boat or moved it to NC within the last 2.5 years, it should also be titled. The hull number is on the title, so the WRC should be able to look that up.

I assume the Coast Guard towed the boat to shore?

Yeah, The 14' waterline thing, that's it. smirk Just Kidding.
My bad.
That's a new law(2007)Used to be greater than 20' or has a motor. Doesn't seemed to be enforced around here, but a law is a law.

I had seen this boat on Craigs List last week out of Myrtle Beach and was hoping it wasn't an inexperienced new owner.

But the sail #s don't match

Has anyone heard an update on this story. It was posted this morning, but the boat was found yesterday.

Hope this guy is ok.. but if you live at the beach and go out sailing in the ocean, you got to tell someone you are out sailing..... I had a friend get stranded out in the ocean, he turtled, mast filled up with water and he couldn't right it. He was found the next day cause some family knew he went out sailing the evening before and reported him missing.

Well, on the positive-thinking side, it might be that the person paused while eating his sandwich, threw it back in the cooler, hopped onto the dock -- forgetting to tie the boat up -- and while he walked back to wherever he was going, the boat drifted off.

If it was 23 miles south of the Cape Fear River mouth then it was out almost past Frying Pan Shoals, pretty far out and could have drifted from anywhere.

And, yep, it will have registration numbers if it was from NC.

Todd and Eric are both right on the registration deal. The issue is "public waters". If you sail in the ocean exclusively the boat does not need to be registered or titled, ocean is not "public waters" in that sense. Its when you sail inland that it changes. My trailer is titled in NC, boat is not. I sail offshore in SC 99% of the time. Since I can say the boat resides in NC or SC depending on where I am when asked, I have no numbers on the boat.

Good news, the boat was abandoned after a capsize and the sailors on board were fine. They really should have notified the coast guard immediately.
