That might remind a few people to make that call.

Unregistered | it may be "common knowledge" here that you should call the cg in the event of an abandoning your vessel but i am not so sure if somehow my cat "broke" and was left to float that i would have the presence of mind to call them (until now).
Since there is no license needed here in fl to sail.. and until this year you didnt even have to register or title cats under 20'... how would a new sailor know?

It's pretty self centered to think, the only thing going on here is that someone lost a boat. The skipper of that boat created a hazard to navigation when he left it. The CG should know about all wrecks and debris to issue a warning to mariners.A powerboat hitting that at speed could be ugly, A jetski hitting it at speed could be hilarious. Glad everyone was OK. Posts: 3,224 Roanoke Island ,N.C. | It just came through, but unfortunately it was SO loud it peaks out the speaker and just sounds like a bunch of distortion, or maybe that's what it was.I could make out Trey playing and singing. Sounds like y'all were having fun. I was doing the NASS Oxford race and it was a blast. The Beach Cats started last and passed the WHOLE fleet (157 boats total, beach cats included)to do the race in abot 2 hours and 15 minutes or so. Doug Kirby and Andy Herbick raced us hard down the Bay and then put the spank on us when we went up the river, to get line honors. This is a great race with a good party. Some of you guys should try this next year. Tad's grandparents will put us all up.;P\ Tawd

Unregistered | I am sorry but i don't believe this. its only common sense if you have the background and understanding of this to understand the situation. There is nothing common about abandoning a boat... who is to know what is the correct protocol. Just like it was posted above... his boat was a hazard to others.. in reading this entire thread. that never came to my mind. Now i admit i have limited experience with any rules and regs. I have tried to read EVERYTHING i can from the USCG site's and all the forums in the world, but none of those ever addressed this (perhaps i missed in on the USCG site). I never took any boater safety courses.. (want to and should) but its not required here, and i have not taken vacation time off to do this. My priorities were elsewhere, and since i usually sail with a "pack" i feel safe. Perhaps this is naive. which again backs up my feelings on this... Regardless, glad they are ok. good info in this thread, perhaps it will educate others as it has for me.

If your car broke down on I-95 would you leave it in the middle lane for other people to hit, and not call the police or a tow truck?

Unregistered | If your car broke down on I-95 would you leave it in the middle lane for other people to hit, and not call the police or a tow truck? apples to oranges. you have to have a license to drive a car you have to pass a written and driving exam.. you would have 1000's of cars zipping by you... neither of those items are similar to abandoning a beach catamaran, even more so since they don't need tags in many locations (mine, yet). I would call a tow service and if it was looking like it would cause an accident i would call both... my point was... this thread made me think of how to handle an abandonment that i never thought of before and maybe others. if that means i have no "common sense" ... well we can add that to the list of my flaws... | | |
