I've got an old Solcat 19. Its factory mast is designed without a diamond wire.

When it tumbled over on the beach it bent the mast.

I believe I can resolve the bend by installing diamond wires.

My question is where can I come up with a used spreader assembly???

A swept back assembly would probably be better.

Any thoughts???

Check the Hobie 16 forum both here and at the Hobie Forum.

There are a number of ways to UNBEND a BENT spreaderless mast.

My Prindle 15 went over on the beach at a local lake during a short lived, but violent wind and rain storm. No sail damage, but it bent the mast.

I spoke with the Prindle factor and based on their recommendations I straightened my bent P-15 mast by placing it on two solid objects, placed a piece of carpet on the area of the bend, and slowly and increasingly pressed down on the bend with my small tractor loader bucket. It eventually straightened out.

The factory suggested I consider installing Prindle 18 spreaders. They of course offered to sell me a new set, and also suggested I search for a used P-18 set. You might also consider spreaders from a P-18.

We bend all manner of metals to test them. One aspect of aluminum is it takes the largest mandrel (round surface) to bend it without over stressing the point of contact. Aluminum suddenly breaks if the stress point is too focused. Heating helps... some... but bear in mind that aluminum does not let you know it is about to turn into a liquid state by glowing.
