how welcome are inexperienced,. recreational sailors at these events?
i live in newark and regularly go to rehoboth since i have family there,
too bad ill be up in bensalem pa this weekend, really wish i could go down and see all the boats
where are you located rhodysail?
ive been wondering about some lower delaware sailing issues, such as places to put into rehoboth bay, and park trailer/truck without being charged an arm and a leg or buying a parking permit for the season.
and other issues like put in points for the harbor of refuge/lewes bay, that dont involve a mile hike over the crowded lewes bay beaches and private beaches further north...
arg!!! it sucks not having any usage of beaches down there, everywhere we went, wed get chased off being told we cant put in there, even if there wasnt someone for miles, sure enough theyd show up just as we got half way to the water....

(this is with a friends boat who has since left the cat sailing world, mine isnt quite ready yet)
thanks
jason

Do you have any general knowledge of sailboat racing?

Do you know about right of ways, starboard/port tacks, rounding room, etc?

You will find that almost anyone you ask or show an interest in their boat will talk with you about it. Go down their and hang around the beach. You'll learn alot. It might even get you to want to start racing.

Curious rec sailors of any stripe are welcome at cat regattas. After the racing on Saturday afternoon is a good time for chat and a beer. Also, race committees are always looking for help running races. Even if you don't want to race your boat, you can help out setting marks, beach committee, social committee, etc.

Access is somewhat limited without a State Park permit ($50. per season or $5.per day)The Rehobeth sailing club has daily memberships but they are expensive. Midway between the Indian River Inlet bridge and Dewey is a sailing beach on the bay side but you will need a permit and remember to be kind to the windsurfers and kite guys as they have pretty much declared the beach theirs. The set up there is pretty nice with a small ramp and lots of parking.just remember the water there is thin.I am one of the few cat guys that use the area.South of Bethany is another put in place but again, you need a permit.

Sounds complicated. It's easier just to go to the regatta.

cheers
Bill

where in the state park (wich one again?) is there a put in point for boats that dont involve carrying them 500 feet across hot sand????
i dont have a cat trax so its a bit complicated for me....
thanks
jason
p.s. i dont live down in lower delaware so its not really economical for me to buy a permit for a beach im gonna use maybe 4 times this year

Just south of Dewey Beach on the bay side you will see a small sign that says "sailing" turn right into the parking lot. The boat ramp is set up for sailing and a lot of guys just back the trailer up to the beginning of the beach and hump the boat off the trailer and onto the sand. 25' puts you into the water at high tide. There is a little guard shack occupied by a watchman who will collect your entrance fee.If no one is in the shack, follow the instructions to avoid a meeting with a uniformed, mirror sunglassed,Glock armed Park Ranger.Best to avoid those pricks if at all possible.

Rehobeth is a short 1.5 hour drive from my parents' place on the Eastern Shore of MD. This sounds like a nice place to get on the water.
