Well it's not cats but at least it's in the right direction, Better than midget wrestling or lawn mower racing. Now all we have to do is email ESPN and ask for some VX 40 coverage too!

Join Gary Jobson and the ESPN sailing team for this exciting new event, The New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, raced in identically matched Club Swan 42s.

Over four days, September 16 - 19, nineteen teams from 14 nations sailed an incredibly tight battle. The crews were amateur except for one professional tactician on each boat. For the first time ESPN broadcasts a sailing regatta in High Definition.

"The combination of aerial, on-the-water and onboard videography gives the viewer a unique vantage point," say producer and host Gary Jobson. "The strongest element of this program is the audio quality of the tacticians who wore microphones."

Please join us and tell your sailing friends to tune in during prime time:

ESPN2 Sunday, October 25 at 8:00pm eastern (5:00pm pacific)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Golden Year of 12 Metres

The ESPN sailing team spent four days filming a record seventeen 12 metres competing off Newport, RI. This was the largest gathering of 12 meters in the United States.

ESPN Classic Saturday, November 7 at 1:00pm eastern (10:00am pacific)

Was he invited? He's pretty busy this time of year doing all the Leukemia Cup regattas and other public speaking engagements. I'll send him an email and invite him to the GC though, maybe he'll show up, can he stay in your room? ;^)

Hey, I just got an email back from Gary and I told him about the GC and invited him on down, and I also told him about this web site so he can get info.

So Pete, he's staying with you but using the public rest rooms, right?

;^)

And sleeping on the floor. I mean, this was THE U.S. Multihull championship. It's not like there's one for each class, like the monohulls.

BTW, what's his eta? wink

Sh!t, I forgot to tell him about the free Rum, that might have got him to show up!

Have you read the book, Fastnet, Force 10? He skippered Ted Turner's Tenacious for many years and has some great stories to tell about Ted and his antics. Funny stuff.

I'm confused. "Fastnet Force 10" is a about a disaster during the Fastnet race. I guess somewhere off the U.K. is Fastnet rock. Bad weather (force 10) hit a racing fleet and several people died, a number of boats were wrecked. Mountainous seas, hurricane force winds iirc.

And won by Ted Turner and Gary Jobson. You missinterpreted my "funny stuff" comment, it was not about the race, it was about sailing with Turner.

I wasn't even thinking about who won it. At least one person died from being crushed by a wave (again iirc). He was sitting in the ****, harness and line all working fine, and a wave broke with such force his ribs were crushed.

15 knots is about my limit. 2m. wave is one meter too many.

Well, if you read the book then you know what I'm talking about, but for those who did not read the book, one of Turner's favorite ploys was to bring a few bikini clad beauties on board for an around the cans type race, and at about 5 minutes before the start he would have them all stand at the aft **** stantions, topless, waving to all the other boats crews and then as if by magic, all the other boats would drop in line behind him at the start!

And according to Gary, during the Fastnet, while lots of other boats were withdrawing, Turner was seasick and puking over the rail but he refused to stop racing, shouting orders between heaves over the side.

Fastnet Rock is off Co Cork in SW Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, that is, which is not part of the UK but a sovereign nation of its own. SW Ireland happens to be one of the most scenic parts of the world I've ever been to and I'd highly recommend a visit.

Six of the counties in the NE corner of Ireland constitute Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK. The coast of Northern Ireland is also pretty amazing.

Obviously Dermot knows all this--just info for anyone interested.

It was a good program. I was glad to see some sailing on tv. Really close one-design racing. It would have been much more interested had it been cats though.

I watched it too and I will tell you it made me cringe a little bit. I started my racing life crewing on an Etchells and then a J36, then a J35 back when they first came out, and the skipper was a screamer, just like some of those guys on that program, and as I watched it I remembered why I left him and got my own racing boats, with fewer and fewer crew! Man, I don't miss that!

And I thought it was supposed to be an "Amature" type race? Ken Reed was running the show on the winning NYYC boat, he's about as Pro as you can get!
