Port dagger board and spring gone after broad sided by 6' bow wave of 'Contrarian', a 70' super yacht. This was on top of 2-3' chop in the harbor. She crossed me within 50-75 yards under heavy air -20-25knts. I was knocked of the boat, bruized and shaken. I approached the captian later that day at the marina and he accepted reponsibility for his actions($315).

After hitting a log in English Bay in Vancouver, BC, we now tie the H-17 dagger board springs to the pivot pins. A small line or heavy sail thread will do the job. Also, proper adjustment of the board line will help, the aft edge of the board should never extend below the hull.

Great idea, you know those springs are $50 a copy! I believe hobie specs the dagger depth at around 12", I suggest 8" depth or even less when it blows stink for more support of the dagger in the well.

Port dagger board

I thought 17's had centerboards?
and that really sucks about losing one; I hit a Hobie Getaway with my P-19 a couple weekends ago and got to buy him a new cover for his port wing, and to do a lot of unplanned duct taping that night. The boat looks funny now with the unpainted patch on the port bow (yeah, I was at fault, ducking him on a port-tack start, and my stick slipped.) Any, keep on having fun till the $$ is gone...

Didn't break it on the weekend, but I just broke one of my rudders on my H16. going to have to buy a new one to replace it, maybe 2 so I have a matched set again.

I know the feeling. I broke a daggerboard (well about 7cm of the trailing edge was non-existent to about 1/2 way up) on some rocks that are supposed to be a meter under the water , and are not signposted in any way. that was on my paper tiger. it's a bit of a jolt when you are sailing along quietly and all of a sudden your boat wants to pick it's nose up and you hear a sickening crunch from underneath.

This was real sickening since it was on the race course with approx 15 feet of water under the keel. The wind was approx 10 mph and I was on a reach and was starting to bring the main in tight to go faster.

Could be it was time for that rudder to break since it had been slightly abused and it was at least 15 years old.

Yeah those springs are a bitch. I've replaced one already, and now I've safety wired mine into those pivot pins.

Glad to see that the captain owned up.... of course, presuming he was the owner of a 75 foot motor yacht, $315 is a drop in the bucket.

Were you able to avoid him, or was this a narrow body of water where you couldn't get out of his way?

Boom gooseneck pin fell out of the boom, had to drive back to the house to drill a bolt into the side to keep it in there, don't know how long it will last seeing as the boom likes to rotate on that pin, and now it can't.

Also lost a main luff batten cap.

Downhaul cheek block ripped out of the mast. Just got done making a stainless plate to attach the new block to the mast.

Almost a mast as it was over-rotated 180 degrees when we noticed it(going upwind) 2 on the wire, 3 people total. When I dumped the main it bent back the wrong way and it has spreaders! Scary !
Jake Kohl was the 3rd man on the boat so he rigged(hes an engineer) a mast rotation limiter from my barber haulers, and we somewhat babied it around the course, staying off the wire.
Then a trapeze line broke with Jake Kohl on it, he had to swim a bit.
Then as we were about to round the "c" mark we noticed the jib block had lost a dammit ring and the pin. We had to temporarily tie it off until we tacked again.
Then one ear of the shackle broke clean off leaving the pin precariously hanging on to the main blocks under load going upwind. Jake Kohl again tied it off and 2 seconds later the pin let go. almost like in the movies.

Okay, I should have checked all of this before hand, but most of it was stressed beyond belief on Saturday in 20-30 and 5 ft seas, maybe bigger. I am glad we took on another crew who happened to be an engineer.
THANKS JAKE !!!!!!!

Does your boat have a boom?

How loose were your shrouds to allow it to rotate that much?

I broke the wooden support that holds the back of the mast two weeks ago. I built a new one out of 2x4s that seems to work a lot better than the old one.

This was only after I had crashed and burned four times on Saturday to have torn the foot of my main and had broken three battens in the 15 knot beam reach and 4-6' stern quartering seas on Saturday. My crew (who had never been on a sailboat before) was toast and I was pissed at my inability to maintain "pointy side up" long enough to finish.

While racing for the lead against that 21 and an H20 in the conditions on Saturday while playing "Flight of the Valkerie" in my mind was the high-lite, that was a great run in the puffy conditions on the G-force on Sunday! I've never seen a boat that was more comfy with three on board! (heck even with 6 it would be comfy!)
